Dad was Air Force for 4 years. Brother retired from Navy after 20, and I served 29 in the Navy, 20 of which were assigned to ships/submarines.

Damn 29 years! That's awesome. You must have been an officer or a Master Chief. Congrats on making it that long and thank you for your service!

But that's most walks of life. Parents raise their children to replace them.

14yrs Active duty CG. Only family member directly related to me was my Uncle who did 4yrs in the AF during Desert Storm. Wasn't really a huge factor for me, but it helped. I had decent up bringing now that I'm older and wiser. But still had issues towards the end of high school at my house. I saw a rescue swimmer deploy out of a helicopter and a response boat save people under the Golden Gate Bridge in the 7th grade and that was it for me. I was like I want to do that when I grow up. 8th grade exhibition project was on the Coast Guard and I joined at 17.5 yrs old after graduating 6 months early to join. Been doing it ever since. I'll be putting my letter in at 20 yrs and at about 38 yrs old.

I guess you could say that I fall into the category of the last 3 yrs of high school being absolutely miserable at my house, and my uncle serving. I also married my wife out of boot camp at 18.. (turned 18 while in boot camp). Been a good 14 yrs so far.. Little hiccups here and there but overall very happy with my current life and situation. The Coast Guard is turning in a good direction I feel like which is nice. Mission and People are the highest priority which is really nice to see.

I enlisted in the AF to avoid the draft and never looked back for 23+ years. I never regretted a minute of it. Spent some time in Vietnam but didn't have to go out in the jungle. The guys that did have been in my prayers ever since. My dad was a Marine in WWI. My brother was in the army serving as part of the occupational forces in the Philippines in/following WWII. My uncles were in the Army and Navy.

Never served but I respect those that do. My father-in law was in the US Air Force and stationed in Okinawa. He's still alive and I enjoy all the stories he has to tell. He's a fountain of knowledge and I have learned quite a bit from him. I've seen some of his photos as well. The Japanese girls wanted to hook up with him and he was one of the few that understood their language lol! Smart guy!

I just think politicians use soldiers as cannon fodder. Would feel better if they and their children served on the front lines after declaring their wars. Too many men have died fighting wars at the behest of others. Now with WW2 no question America had to respond to Japan. I watched Midland the other day and those fighter pilots had balls on them!

Not sure if you're serious. That is not even close to being true. That may have been more true back in the '50s and '60s, but not today. Kids are much more independent and choose the path that THEY want. I was sitting here thinking about all of the families that I know and I can only think of two families where one or more of the children pursued the vocation (service or civilian) of the parent(s). So, no, parents today for the most part do NOT raise their children to replace them.

I did not serve, but my grandpa was in the Army and served in France during WW2 where he was wounded by friendly fire. My wife’s side has several who served.

The wife’s dad was Army (101st Airborne) and was killed in 1985 in the Gander plane crash over Canada.

Just hit 17 years in August, wanted to go to flight school after High School but as soon as my parents saw the $50k+ price tag they pointed me towards an AF recruiter. Of course it took me forever to finish my Bachelors so now I'm too old for a UPT slot. I operate drones now (MQ-9s) so at least I have a fun enlisted job.

As for family my mother's, father's, and step-father's dads were in the Marines (O3), Navy (E9), and Army (O5) respectively. I have a cousin that did a term or two in the Marines and another that is currently in the AF.

I was at Andersen AFB during the winter of '65/'66. I drove a fuel truck. I never made it to the Navy base.
