Yeah. I left the '10 out just to make sure nobody was sleeping at the wheel.
To wit, I now have low mileage systems from the following...an OE X-pipe from an '09 GT500, an OE H-pipe from a '11 GT500, and the OE H/Quad pipe from a '12 Boss 302. Some of what you'll see is to be expected and some may surprise you. Let's begin...
L to R...'09, '11, '12 (Boss)
It is generally assumed that the early 2-1/2" diameter system wouldn't flow as well as the later (read that as larger) 2-3/4" system. Makes perfect sense. The Boss pipe is all over the map with regards to diameter and I'll get to that later.
Something struck me immediately about the '11 pipe - the converters are different than those used in '07-'09 and are very similar to those used on the Boss (as well as the 5.0 GT).
'09 left '11 right.
Word is that the later GT500 pipe uses larger diameter exhaust manifolds. Considering that, I paid close attention to the inlets. Not the kink on the '11 system...
Also note that the short section of pipe, between the manifold and the cat - necks down to a smaller diameter...
The '09 pipe doesn't neck down as much. There is a crimp on the right side pipe at the O2 bung, however...
Curios as to the OD of the pipes at their smallest point (this being the section between the manifold and the cat) I measured each. The '11 OD...
The '09 OD...
Color me surprised that the newer system is more restrictive at the start. Curiosity now on alert, I wanted to verify the assumption that the two pipes utilize different diameter ball ends at the exhaust manifold exit. In other words, I thought the newer system accommodated a larger manifold. Measuring the ID at the bell mouthed opening (2-3/4") on the '11 pipe...
The '09 pipe, measures the same!
Very surprising. Now the exit portion, be it X or H...

Boss
What else caught my eye - the Boss cats and the '11 cats are very similar. You almost can't tell the difference when I don't show the entire cat...
I had wondered if the 5.4 cat was a more robust/higher flowing unit that the GT/Boss. They appear to be very much the same.
Gotta cut this one short. More tomorrow!
