This is mostly directed to my fellow mystichrome owners.

There has been more debate over the availability, price, ease of application and so on about this paint, and along with my problems, i decided to make a few calls and converse a bit. Here is the final run down. There is not a "factory pack" because the factory bakes the paint at a much hotter temp than a custom paint shop can, do to the fact that the car has no components in it like seats or plastics, therefore the paint available to the consumer has a slightly altered chemical composition. Now, the paint its self is available through car quest via PPG and their Deltron brand of premium paint systems. This paint requires a ground/base coat of black epoxy sealer for maximum saturation of color. This undercoat code is G7. The color coat or mid-coat is where the shift takes place. This PPG paint code is 903070 or Ford code G6. This is the most expensive portion of the process. At around $500-$700 per quart there is not much room for mistakes. However, this is reduced at a 1:1 ratio, so purchasing 2 quarts and reducing properly will yield one gallon of paint. This is PLENTY of paint to completely repaint a cobra and some. The final layer is of course the clear or top coat. This is a urethane top coat. Now applying this is no more difficult than spraying anything with a can of walmart spray paint. You use the same steps and techniques anytime one paints anything. Proper preparation is required ie. taping and masking off. Then with a steady hand and proper spraying skills its as easy as 1) spray the G7 black epoxy sealer in 3-4 medium coats overlapping each pass by 75%, this will insure proper coverage for the mid coat. This first base coat will be 3mil thick, allow to dry to the touch and now. 2) spray the G6 color coat with the same application as the base G7 coat, 3-4 medium coats with a 75% overlap with each pass, allow to dry to touch and now. 3) spray the clear coat in the exact same process, 3-4 medium coats with a 75% overlap with each pass. These are the fundamentals to achieve proper thickness and coverage for most layers of paint. You can purchase everything you need to repaint a Mystichrome Cobra, with no body work needed, for around $1200-$1500. Here is a formula from PPG directly..

yeah i know it can be purchased through multiple providers, i just have been told that the deltron brand is one of the best for quality of product, its funny cause the paint makes no difference its all about the ChromaFlair toner produced by JDSU out of calli. So im gonna contact there north american dis. tomorrow and see about purchasing prices. you should check out their website

jdsu.com

and is that price you listed for the color coat or the black base coat? also if it is the color coat is it a premium brand? because i was told that the adhesion properties of the lower grade "cheaper" paint is not as good and the that lifetime of the "cheaper" paint is not as long either. Thanks, im having to fight with my body shop because they used a grey primer under my paint and should not have because the specs call for a black base to make sure that the color saturation is rich enough.

That's R-M brand the paint used by the Ford dealer I was refered to by R-M. It came out as a perfect match, color flip etc. The part above is for the Mystichrome color basecoat.

good news, i talked with a rep at JDSU, the manufacture of the "pigment" that is supplied to EVERY paint company who offers a formula for the mystichrome paint. This is what was told to me " we here at JDSU are the creator and supplier of the color shifting pigment that is used color shifting paints. It is the pigment that is added to a "toner" which paint suppliers like to call their own, its a play on words. Our pigment is sold by the poundage and for example 1 lb of pigment is about $1800, however that 1lb of pigment will create many quarts of "toner". " This is good news considering the many options for paint suppliers. So as long as you purchase a mix from a premium company that uses proper mixing formulas, there should be no issue of color matching and it leaves the margin for error up to the paint shop and painter. Therefore, the problems with my paint are derived directly from the "user" and not the "product". Thank you JDSU for your help in securing my argument for my car to be refinished!

also this company supplies Sherwin Williams, who owns Duplicolor, with their pigment, so the Mirage paint offered is using the same pigment, just not the same formula for the overall mix. Also, I was told that JDSU will be supplying Rustoleum with a line of color shifting paint that should hit the shelves around July. Hello color shifting EVERYTHING!!

I wonder how JDSU got the rights??? The additive was devolped by BASF in Huntington WV by a friend's friend. They always remind me of that. They may have bought the rights to it you just never know. I do remember when a pint of the additive ran $360.00 and it took around 60% of it along with everything else to make 1 pint of paint.

I never used to really like this color, the cars always seemed to just look hazy with a ton of swirl marks in the paint. Now after seeing some pictures here and a few up close at car show it has to be one of my favorites!

You just bumped a 2 year old thread.
After looking at your post history it is quite apparent to me that you have not yet read the rules.

I can help with that and also with the paint code question.
2004 Mystichrome SVT Cobra Mustangs are not "Mystic", those do exist and were made in 2006 and will cause confusion and possibly a wrong paint job if you continue to call it that.

The 2004 Mystichrome paint code is G6.

The rules:
