Where did you get the Boss rods and pistons? Roughly how much would it cost to go this route?

You can get the Boss 302R rods and pistons from Ford Racing.

Call tousley ford. The rods, pistons, and crank were around $1100 if I remember correctly. Bearings, gaskets, and bolts ran another $200-$300.
