I've got a couple small tattoos and I've always felt a little sick a couple hours after getting them, but it wasn't too bad. I got my ribs done today for about 4 hours and felt like complete crap not too long after. I was in the bathroom about to throw up for a few hours tonight. I have another 4-5 hours left to finish up the tattoo, but now I'm a little scared to get it all done at once.

Is this common after getting a tattoo? Any tips to not feel deathly ill after getting a tattoo done?

That's a tender spot and 4 straight hours is a lot in that area. The nausea is normal for some people.
You'll feel fine tomorrow.

Did the tattoo artist tattoo Pam Anderson before you?

JK, I agree with Black Justin. Eat a decent meal before and I bet it will help alot.

Echoing what others have already said: eat a decent meal.

Every time I've gotten work done and I didn't eat beforehand, I wound up feeling like total shit afterward. Splitting headache, usually.

Oh, and pics of your work.

4-5hrs is a pretty good set.
Never heard of anyone getting sick except those with really big problems with blood. Probably just your body responding to that long of sitting in pain.

Maybe it's because you didn't eat anything for a while. I had one tattoo that took like 4 hours and I felt really sick, I just took a break half way through to eat and then I felt good to go after.

Strange, I don't know of anyone personally that has had this problem. I had a 3 1/2 hour set when I got the tattoo on my shoulder blades/spine and didn't have any problems. I hadn't eaten since the previous night and still felt okay. Maybe nerves or something triggers it.

I figured it was probbaly due to not eating for a long period of time. I had lunch at noon and went in at 1:30. The artist had to do some changes to it and we didn't get started til around 3:00. We worked nonstop until 7:00 and I was too wound up to eat dinner right after. I think when I go back I'll bring some snacks to eat and take more 5 min breaks.

Holy crap I gotz da AIDS? Life is over as we know it! :cryying:

Its from the adrenaline in your system. You hype yourself up to deal with the pain and when it's over your system is flooded with adrenaline. Usually it makes you queasy/light headed. After my tattoos I've had to sit in the waiting area for about a half hour for my head/stomach to get back to normal.

I never have a problem with tats. No nausea and the pain is easy for me to tolerate. I've got about 75 hours worth of work done. My wife, on the other hand, has about 40 hours worth of work and each one of them was excruciatingly painful for her. Everybody reacts differently. The buildup and subsequent dump of adrenaline probably isn't doing you many favors in the nausea department. Try mentally relaxing and coming to terms with what's about to happen. I feel that when I'm relaxed and not nervous about a potential painful section, then it goes much more smoothly.

It's not a great pic for reference, but the sleeve on my left arm took 40 hours over the course of 3 days and I never once felt light headed or nauseous. I've seen people who are perfectly healthy pass out after a 30 minute tattoo.

Here is a pic of the progress so far. The star was already there so he is incorporating it in the design. The outline is finished, he was able to start making the lines thicker and clean them up towards my chest and front of my ribs. He also started some shading around the star and in the circles nearby.
