http://sites.state.pa.us/PA_Exec/State_Police/press/pr06801.htm HARRISBURG (Nov. 8,2001) — Tpr. Tod C. Kelly, a 16-year veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police, was struck and killed Wednesday, Nov. 7, on Interstate 79 in Allegheny County. Kelly, 43, died shortly before 8 p.m. when struck by a sport utility vehicle while removing debris from the southbound lanes of I-79 in Robinson Township between Neville Island and Route 60. "This is a very sad day for the Pennsylvania State Police," said State Police Commissioner Paul J. Evanko. "The loss of a trooper touches everyone in the Department. We extend our deepest condolences to Tpr. Kelly's family." Kelly, who was patrolling alone, was dispatched to the area after State Police received a report of a large piece of metal creating a traffic hazard on I-79. State Police said the driver of the vehicle that struck Kelly stopped immediately and is cooperating with the continuing investigation. Kelly, of Wampum RD 1, Lawrence County, enlisted in the State Police in June 1985. He spent most of his career with Troop B, Findlay, Allegheny County, where he was assigned to the Patrol Unit. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; a daughter, Heather, 23, and a son, Joshua, 18. Kelly is the 88th trooper killed in the line of duty since the formation of the State Police in 1905.
