input shaft bearing replacement

Hello all,
I am having an issue with my transmission, and over the past few weeks it has become more noticable. When the car is in neutral and the clutch is not engaged, it makes a whirrling sound like a bearing is going out. When you push the clutch in, the sound goes away. I believe this to be the input shaft bearing and have ordered the input shaft bearing, race, shim kit (from lethal performance), input shaft seal, pilot bearing, and throwout bearing. I figured i would replace all the bearings in that area while disassembled. What do you guys think is causing this noise? Is my diagnosis correct on the input shaft bearing?
I believe it has the stock 10 spline input shaft but i just bought the vehicle and the previous owner did not mention any transmission upgrades.

I think you could be correct with your thinking. When you disengage the clutch the input shat stops turning, however so does the countershaft. So I agree that most likely it's the input bearing. If it was the throwout bearing the noise would not go away but it's not a bad idea to replace it while your in there. It is a bit unusual for a input shaft bearing to go bad but it does happen. I am a Ford tech and transmissions are my deal.

Thanks for your quick input guys. I guess it's a good thing i bought all the bearings i did. I realize i won't know exactly what it is until i drop the trans/crack it open. I the transmission shifts fine in all gears and doesnt make any grinds. Also, i should note that it makes the same bearing whirl noise in any gear while driving. Again, while driving at any given speed, if i put it in neutral and push the clutch in, the noise goes away.

Okay guys, i was in a bit of a time crunch so i dropped the tranny today and found out the TOB was on its way out so i replaced it with a national TOB. Had to reassemble it cause the shop was closing in an hour. Its still making the same noise and im certain it's the input shaft bearing. Now it looks like i will be taking it back to the bay and tearing it apart again... any thoughts on this? I would really like to diagnos this problem before tearing it all apart again. Could the clutch be the issue? It still has the stock 10 spline so i doubt the transmission has ever been "cracked open".

Bringing this old thread back to life here. What ended up solving your problem? I’m having the exact same issue. Had a transmission specialist check everything out and he claims the bearings “looked fine”. But I’m wondering if the countershaft bearing could be bad without visually appearing bad.
