Brake setup recommendation for beginner track event

So those "sport" pads may or may not be adequate for the track. It will depend on your driving style, but most beginners tend to drag the brakes and heat them up. At the first sign of fade you should do some cool down laps and/or come off the track. Also make sure you don't use your parking brake after a session, or say goodbye to your rear rotors.

SCCA track nights are fun, but if you decide this is something you want to do again I HIGHLY recommend doing events with an instructor. You don't want to let bad track habits sink in before an instructor can correct them. Or worse... never make it to that point

Thanks for the tips, I could certainly benefit from them. I've read about the benefits of making laps with an instructor, or paying for lessons with an instructor. I would love to get some laps in with an instructor, I wonder if they offer that at the SCCA track nights (I thought I read that...?)

I went to an SCCA track night at Pocono Raceway and there were no instructors. It may vary in different regions. Never hurts to email the organizer and ask

I was at a Hooked on Driving event at NJMP-Thunderbolt 2 weeks ago. I was in the novice group (Group A) and they assign you a coach that rides with you during all four 20-minute sessions. I found it very helpful. My coach even took me as a passenger on several of his sessions in the advanced group.

I believe they have an event at Pocono later in the year. I know that DeMonte Motorsports also has some events at NJMP which an instructor as an option.

Well my track night was a success in terms of my learning the track, my car, and my driving abilities! I was in the novice group with 22 others, and there were no instructors available to go with me in the car. I didn't really see many SCCA guys there in general (maybe 3 guys?). We did receive the after session briefing/coaching by the main SCCA coordinator there - which was helpful.

Back to the brakes... I am very happy with how the Stoptech setup performed during the three sessions. I was getting on the brakes hard @ approx 125+mph entering the turns after the couple straights. At first I thought I felt fading and smelled the brakes after the first several laps but then realized they were not fading (it was my ABS pulsing from braking too a few times) and hung in there fine. There was a lot of dust and they smelled like they were really hot - but they seemed completely fine during the runs and after. Being a total novice I probably was not ultra aggressive on them, but I think I was on them harder than most in my group...? My car's curb weight (w/out me and gas) was around 3450 I believe.

Glad you had fun! I would definitely try to make your next event an instructor one. After-session classes can't even compare.
Being a novice can actually be worse on your brakes. Novices tend to brake longer/softer which heats them up more.
Shorter, harder braking heats them up a bit less

Agreed. For my 2014 I went with the Vorshlag ducted backing plates and their brake inlet cooling ducts that fit behind the lower grill. Minor mod to the grill (Dremel out the back of 7 of the closed hex areas on either side) and drill a 3" hole in the bumper cover with a hole saw on either side.

Vorshlag's ducts are very functional, although i went with the more basic setup - 302s ducts and FTBR backing plates.
