Panic mode - emission monitors not resetting - tune related??

Please help! I bought a 2010 Roush Mustang 'Hammer' (700hp supercharged) a couple of weeks ago and disconnected the battery to do some electrical work. A few days later I went to get state inspection and failed the emissions test, due to four monitors not being active. I didn't realize that disconnecting the battery would wipe out the memory of the monitors. My bad. I went to local Mustang tuner the day after I failed and he checked the system and said the monitors ARE turned on in the tune, which seemed like a good thing.

However, I have driven 300 miles over the past 7 days, utilizing all kinds of assorted "drive cycles" and all four monitors (CAT, EVA, O2S, HTR) are still showing "not ready" on my OBD program (AutoEnginuity). Perhaps the monitors have NEVER actually been ready? I have no way of knowing now, but I need to pass the emissions test. The car DOES have cats (hi-flo) and all O2 sensors appear to be in place.

Can someone PLEASE give me some guidance on this issue?? I am lost, and very frustrated. I can fix most things on cars, but I am a bona fide newbie when it comes to the computer stuff.

Thanks for any help. I am completely ready, willing and able to pay for some assistance here.

Well, I think I've got my own answer. I need to go see a real specialist in this crap, and the best guy in Northeast seems to be Pete at Performance Dyno in Loudon, NH. I've heard numerous glowing recommendations for this guy, plus he advertises this EXACT issue on his web site, as shown in screen shot below:

Time to go rent a car trailer..................... I just hope he can squeeze me in without having to wait three months.

If you followed the proper drive cycle and the monitor didn't set something is up.

Pete is the best in the area. He'll get you all squared away for emissions.

This is a fairly common issues with Roush tunes. Like bigmoose mentioned, it's part of the drive cycle that is difficult to complete. What worked for me and at least 1 other Roush based tune car was to drive 40 mph for 4 miles, nonstop. It's harder to do, than it sounds.

Oh yeah, I spent a full week and 250 miles of various "drive cycles" and monitors did not set. My appointment with Pete in on July 18. I just got a letter from State of RI threatening to suspend registration effective July 31. So I'm hoping Pete can fix, otherwise I wasted a whole lot of money.

I did the 40mph thing and many other drive cycles, but no joy. And you're right, it was harder to do than expected, haha.

He will fix it. I've been there. You'll want to get your inspection the same day....

Well, I will have to get it done next day after tune. He starts at 3PM, says he only does one car a day. I am guessing he's done by 6PM, then it's 9PM before I get home. I truly don't care what time I get home so long as the damn thing is fixed, hahahaa.

Did he give you two separate tunes? That is, one specifically for emissions and then another one for 'normal' driving???

Did you follow the exact manufacturer parameters? On my car its a certain amount of fuel in the tank and a certain distance at speed with coolant temps in a certain range.

Just making sure you got the parameters from Ford.

Yeah thanks man, I had the Ford parameters, plus I tried a few others. I eventually discovered the monitors are shut off in the tune. I confirmed that from the seller, who contacted the guys that tuned it in Florida.

Cool man glad you got it figured out. Not sure why theyd turn those off unless the equipment was removed.

What happened to the local Mustang guy that confirmed they were all turned on? This stuff drives me crazy. I dealt with the same thing last time inspection came up and I had the stock cats on the car. Bama never could figure it out

Well, the local guy (who shall remain nameless since I don't like to publicly bad-mouth people) got it wrong about the monitors being turned on: monitors are actually OFF in the tune, I confirmed with original tuner in Florida.

So I went back to local guy anyway after driving numerous drive cycles, figuring he MIGHT be able to fix the tune. However, he was zero help and then he FLOORED me when said he would NOT tune it unless his shop built the motor (are you kidding me?). So I left and will never go back there. Life goes on.

And yeah, this stuff drives me crazy too! o_O

The fate of this car now rests in the hands of Pete at Performance Dyno in Loudon, NH. Hopefully on July 18 I have a car that will pass emissions. I mean, it runs clean and strong, so I'm sure it would pass any sniffer test right now.

So did you pass inspection? I'm not saying you should call anybody out now but obviously he didn't want to tune your car b/c then it still wouldn't pass

I didn't want a 'power' tune, I wanted the current tune modified to pass emissions, that's the whole point.

If the local guy wasn't who wrote your tune it's pretty much impossible to know if they are on. You can only tell beyond "not ready" by looking at the editable tune file which only the original tuner will have access to (assuming we're talking SCT). I get not wanting to "fix" your tune since he can't, he'd have to re-tune it, but not trying to sell you a full tune is odd. With SCT once you make the burnable file (the one on the tuner) no one can access it not even the person who created it, the editable file is a different format.

Thanks for the info. I did not know this. I freely admit I know only enough about tuning EFI to be dangerous, haha. I was excellent tuner back in days when we had real distributors and carburetors, LOL. Assuming what you say is true, then WHY did he tell me they were "On" in the first visit???????

Dunno, my guess is to blow you off. Other possible reason is since it was "not ready" as opposed to "not supported" he thought it was on.

thats incorrect, with the correct tools anyone can read it out and see the tune no problem

OP, if it falls through with your guy in NH give me a shout and I'll get you situated no problem

if you got in touch with the guy in FL that originally tuned it, he should be able to turn all the emissions stuff on for little to nothing, its as simple as clicking the mouse and hitting a few key strokes

I have a similar issue with my Whippled '13 GT.
Over 1700 miles of driving, about 4-5 tune revisions, including a tweak done using HPTuners software (which cost an additional $200), and I've been putting 200-400 miles per tune revision, and all 4 oxygen sensors are still not completing the tests they need to go "ready".
Beyond frustrated at this point.
No check engine lights, no pending codes, no drivability issues.
