Ok quick question is there supposed to be a gasket behind the timing chain tensioners. I was looking at timing sets and see that some have gaskets for them. Anybody confirm if they are supposed to have gaskets?

The Primary metal tensioner require a gasket, the plastic ones have a built in O-ring gasket, so to answer your question, yes they Both require a gasket to seal them on to the engine block.

I've never used a gasket on either, ford fsm doesn't show a gasket on any of the tensioners.

Plastic tensioners require the o-ring as mentioned. Put some oil on the o-ring to help keep it from getting damaged during installation. The steel tensioners don't use a gasket or any sealant.

Good to know. I've never encountered a plastic tensioner, only the steel and ive never used a gasket or sealer either. I just happen to be looking at new tensioners and came across one that showed a gasket and it confused me.

I think the Cadillac northstar 4.6l dohc used gaskets on their tensioners. Don't get the two confused.
