Yup, it was an auto. 6spd cars are harder to find for a decent deal. One thing I absolutely hate is trying to find OEM Supra parts. If you find one then it'll cost a fortune. I searched the forums to find a stock oem front bumper for my buddy's '97 TT RSP Supra and couldn't find one that didn't cost a fortune. Why people change the exterior appearance is beyond me. I'll get my hands on one some day, but the Terminator will do just fine for now!

That's what drove me to the Terminator, America's Supra.

At the end of the day it's just a Mustang and parts are readily available. Need a new defrost vent, fender liner, door seal, etc? It's all available cheap and brand new.

Supra is a rare $40-50k car and prices of rare used parts are going to reflect that.

At 30-50k I'd take a R35 or C7 any day of the week over a Supra.

My other problem with the Supra is that you are paying for the looks. Performance wise it's nothing special. 2JZ engines are dirt cheap and can be easily swapped into anything. 240sx, Z-cars, Mustangs, RX7s, Corvette, GT86, etc.

A supra is in my car collection bucket list but the prices look like they're not coming down anytime soon. A clean sc300 might do the trick? Anyone have any comparisons between the two?

FWIW I think an SC is a better looking car anyhow...

IIRC the SC300 shares the same N/A engine as the non-turbo Supra, so I would imagine a GTE swap with the Getrag wouldn't be too brutal. Been about 10+ years since I was looking into all this business though. I would imagine there's a ton of info out now on it anyhow. Good luck.

Edit: Didn't realize this was a thing (shouldn't be surprised, they stuff LSx into damn near anything anymore...):

SC300 is technically a MK3.5 Supra. Overall it's a Luxury version of the MKIV.

I would just build the N/A 2JZ into a turbo unit and mate it to a 350Z CD009 6spd.

CD009s are $500-$1,000 used and $1,800 new. The Getreg is a $6k transmission used these days and it's not any better.

You could always snag an imported Soarer for $12-15k. 1JZ Turbo and a R154 trans.

my brother in law sold a pretty decent one to a customer 2-3 years ago and he wants to trade it in for something else. I'm kicking the thought around of picking it up. Supposedly the 5 speeds are pretty rare.

The US Market 5spd is uncommon. It's also a W58 which means it's built from glass and scrap metal. It won't hold up to more then 300whp.

The JDM 1JZ car came with a R154 5spd.

US N/A Supra are also the weak ass W58.

Sold my 03 SB Cobra last year to buy a 94 TT Supra from a friend, then he decided not to sell. It was the only Supra I would be able to afford. Guess I'll be getting back in a Terminator some day...

It is really discouraging. I constantly look at the Supras on ebay motors just to check where they are. They're being priced so far out of justification and reach. With all the headache of getting one...there are many other superior options for the price range.

You don't buy a MKIV for the performance. It's just that simple. You buy it for the rarity, exclusiveness, nostalgia, styling and attention.

A $20k C6 + a $6k Turbo kit destroys a BPU Supra TT on every imaginable measurement.

There is nothing that a Supra can do that a C6 won't do for less.

My point exactly and I feel ya on the nostalgic presence of a Supra. If I had it my way, and I'm not hard to please...I would have my 04 Cobra, a 93 Cobra and a Supra. And with the price point you're right...you could do the same for a C6 and have money for a few drums of race gas and a keg of beer.

So, you're exactly right. It's the nostalgia factor that would make someone overpay for one.

Common sense and $$$ would have my heart going towards the Vette in the end though.

I got attention every time I took my C6Z out...even when it was stock looking.

I'm still pissed at a friend for not buying a Supra. He's talked about it for years. He sold his really low mile firehawk WS6, and have more money saved. I think he was looking at a near stock emerald green one that I guess was a rare color. I think they wanted about 35-40K. Instead he spent 15K on a 2V race car...that was a POS. Now he's in another 5K in paint, 20K to have the whole thing rebuilt, another 5K in more add on parts, and he's yet to drive it in the 3 years he's owned it because it just bounces from shop to shop. :(

I would like to have a Supra, but the prices are too much for what you get IMO. With that said, your friend made the wrong choice, but hindsight is 20/20.

I've probably put too much into this Miata, but I am driving it till the rust takes it then will buy another NA & transfer most of the parts. I'm actually looking for a boosted NA Miata right now &, if I find the right car/deal, I'll buy it & just sell this current one after I swap parts.
