I was self employed and in my mid 50's when I left my career, or it left me, or some combination of the two. Like you, I was in a position to do it, but I have hated it. Let me tell you, retirement is highly overrated. My friends still work, my wife is younger and still works for the family benefits.

I manage some commercial real estate for the family, but I hate it.

From 1979 till today, the two different things I did for living pretty much allowed me to come and go as I pleased. Make or take phone calls. Run errands. Take care of family business whenever I needed to. Anything I have looked at in retirement would own me while I was "on the clock", or would require my presence on days that I might prefer to have something else planned.

I have simply been unwilling to give up the freedom I had for 39 years. I don't need the money bad enough, and the downsides have too far outweighed the upsides.

Edit: What I have enjoyed is spending more time with the shooting sports since I was involved with that anyway. I help run matches, design stages during the week for the weekend, go to the range an extra day during the week. It gives me something to think about and look forward to when I get up Monday morning. You might think about being more involved with fitness, maybe a personal trainer? Something you like doing anyway.

So I’m thinking that I’ll be semi retiring at the end of this year.
I’ll be in my 40’s.
Long story short. I worked in a small family business that was owned by my father. I’ve worked there in some capacity since I was 16.
The plan was always for me to eventually take the business over but when it came down to the details I decided I didn’t want it. Industry changed too much, wife makes a fortune and I didn’t want to spend my life married to a job I didn’t love anymore so we sold it for a hefty sum of monies. Dad is set for life at 73.

I still work here in the same capacity I used to but it’s just time to move on. That is it. Nothing more nothing less.

And we never had kids.

Looking to work 20-25 hours a week and will take about 25k to make me happy. That’s the story.

Sounds like you're pretty well off financially so I'm going to assume you don't really live in Brockton.

Born and raised Brockton. Living in Naples.
I could never retire that young, I'd go stir crazy. My Dad did at 52 and ended up going to work at a Marina, and ended up full time, but he loved it.
I have thought of doing this but up here in these parts the marina is closed from October to may so no good.

If you guys can believe this I shit you not. I just applied to be a school bus driver. I don’t know why but I always wanted to do this. I need to get a cdl and some class B bus license shit but I may go forward with this. It’s 2 three hour shifts and pays $25 an hour.

We will see. I will be staying on at my current company at least until September but will most likely be done January 1.

I worked with a guy who had been a plant manager for GE, retired early from them, was a headhunter with me for maybe ten years, retired, and drove a school bus for pre-school kids for years and loved it.

Bartend at the pool at a high end resort part time.

Money is excellent (average about $38-50 an hr) and no reporting cash tips, which roughly equals out to $15k to 18k per year.

It put me through college and i’ve met alot of very cool, interesting people. Also some ****heads as well.

I’ve bartended a few of Hef’s bunny ‘parties’ that spiraled out of control at a resort he used to love to come to (la costa) before he died. Fun ass times when you’re getting paid well to motorboat tits and ass.

I still do it as a part time gig for fun and investment/**** around coin. Its a blast slinging drinks. You’re the party. You just never know what type of party situation you’ll find yourself in.

Of course, being around hot bikini clad sluts doesnt hurt either.

My dad has been retired for a couple of years. He got bored and found a job for the state surveying. After a few years he got tired of the being out in the heat and now is a car courier for a big dealership chain. He drives new cars to different dealers in the state.

This is something I’ve seriously thought about.

Only problem is that my area and home gym are in such a depressed location that most can’t afford it. I’m still looking into the certifications that I would need though.
Dont need personal trainers in Brockon. They get enough exercise running from the cops. What line of work is the wife in?

If my dad didn’t do the golf thing then this is what he would have done. I did it when I was 17. It was Awesome
