How to Shift Fast, Is This How You Do It?

I always assume everyone does the same thing when shifting fast. Is this the same way that you do it or do you have a better way (using the clutch).

I've been banging gears for over 40 years. I think it's natural to do something similar to what the guy shows. As he said, each car is different. My current car (Roush Mustang) has RXT twin-disc clutch and you gotta get the clutch pedal all the way to floor for quick shifts, otherwise it's a missed gear.

In the old days, I had plenty of Muncie 4-speeds, and I would bang the crap out of those (full power shifts) without ever letting my foot off the gas pedal. Now that was some fun, haha! Also blew up a few trannies, but they were cheap and easy to fix.

Depends on the car, but usually just keep the gas pedal planted and quickly press the clutch.

I've always wondered what it looks like to other people when I grab gears. I have friends that can all bang gears, but each one is different in style. Kind of interesting to watch them. That's how I learned how to do it. Then, I broke my T-5...hahahaha. 3rd gear checked out with a quickness.
To answer the question, my right foot doesnt move when grabbing gears at the track. When she is spinning on the street I will let up slightly, so it will actually go in.

There are many ways to do it but a lot of it depends on the clutch and transmission. Without disengagement and strong synchronizers, quick will not be possible. A truck, with a heavy disc and wide ratios will need more time to shift gears. vs A light clutch and small transmission like the VW, quick is easier, same with a bike or faceplated transmission.

My Dodge Ram with a NV3500 5 speed manual from a V6 truck.

My fox with a T56 and a Centerforce and hydraulic release.

Back in the day I had four T-5's that I had down to an art swapping in and out of my Paxton '87 LX. It was a weekly occurrence. I kept my local transmission guy gainfully employed. lol

Ahhhh, youth....

^ That sounded like spark knock after putting that truck into 3rd

You have a good ear Rich, better than my knock sensor. Actually it had no knock sensor, they never heard of knock sensor in those years. It had a distributor with weights and springs and vacuum pod for ignition timing advance.

Alot of wrench time to dial that stuff in a truthfully I didn't bother. It was mainly a truck to tow my junk around.

On the other spectrum my Mustang has a Pro M full management system. It's not wrench time, laptop time, which I have lots to do still.
