Is there a market for the Suzuki Jimny (Samurai) in the US?

I've been thinking about picking up a Suzuki Samurai as a project to eventually leave at some property I have in the mountains. After looking for one I found this vid of the newest model which is sold in other markets as the Jimny. Just doing the conversion from AUD to USD it looks like one would cost about $16,500 here. Thoughts?

Those things are still manufactured? When I was a kid those were the poor man's Wrangler. Fun little toys though. I don't think I'd spend 16.5 when there are better options already here in the states.

I would say a resounding yes. Interest in outdoor activities and offroad are getting larger and growing. There are a more choices for a vehicle that can go off road and do all the things you want to do.

But one thing we dont really have is a capable, barebones off roader that costs less that $20k new. I dont expect Rubicon levels of capability out of the box, but the Samurai was a great little option that fit that role.

It was quite underpowered, but with modern engine technology, a 4-cyl NA engine can make a smaller option like Samurai a good wheeler.

If Ford were smart, the Baby Bronco would be a RWD based 4WD vehicle with basic but upgradable solid axles. I guess we will find out soon enough.

Ive been on trails and seen those do very well.

Sent from my LG V30 ThinQ using the svtperformance.com mobile app

Ive seen old Samurai's cruise on top of the softest sand dunes in 2wd with street tires.

They go ANYWHERE... unreal how capable they are.

They are so light on their feet it's pretty shocking how deep they can get into the trails.

Does it need to be street legal or will you keep it off road 100% of the time?

Because there is that little Jeep knock off (Roxor), it has a small diesel, hand shaker and they start at like $16k.

What new vehicles are a better option at that price point?

When the Samurai was sold in the US it came with a larger engine than what was available in other markets. Something like the 1.5L EcoBoost would be perfect here.

Would have to be street legal (50 State) because it would spend some time as a TOAD behind an RV.

That thing looks nice they should sell that thing in the USA I think it'll be a great alternative to the overpriced wrangler.

With any luck, the new Bronco will be competitive and force Jeep to be competitive on price.

That’s the price for a fully converted street legal version, all in?

Edit: Nm. The vehicle is $23k. Should have watched the video first.

You're on crack if you don't think the Bronco is going to be stupid expensive. I don't doubt there'll be a version that goes for more the a loaded Rubicon.
I guest that just cements our (wife and I's) decision to go Rubicon. Pick between a proven off-road platform that will have the Gen 3 eco-diesel option, or a new platform bringing back a nameplate thats already expected to be more than a Wrangler at comparable option points? Nah.

Understandable. I'd take a TJ/LJ Rubicon.
