What is the solution?
Thats the $1MM question. Reforms in some cities have gone really well, while the same policies in others have gone over like a lead balloon. Inherent in the problem is that realistically its gonna take a few years, maybe even a decade, to really see the impact of changes.

I've been saying this for a while. People will believe what they want though. 1 black dude arrested 5 times the same year counts as 5 different arrest for black males. Make that make sense lol.

Those people see no other way to get the governments attention imo, so this is the result. What have the peaceful protest changed? Not saying rioting and looting will change anything either but it sure has gotten the local governments attention. Many here seems to think black people want criminals to go free. That couldn't be further from the truth. Black people just want the punishment to fit the crime, or in this case the use of force to fit the crime. They have this dude pinned to the ground for supposedly using counterfeit money and all he footage released so far does not support that level of force, so if they're holding a trump card they need to play it to calm the people down.

I'm going to bow out of the thread tho cause it's the same discussion every time.

Fine, you want the punishment to fit the crime. Wait to see the what the punishment is before you start burning down cities.

Do you think I'd be in the comfort of my home waiting to be arrested had I chocked a guy out on the street, on camera? I'd be in a cell awaiting charges. Same should apply here.

What is the solution?

Make them criminally liable for everything they do to the same extent as any citizen, no more paid leave, more psychological assessments to get the job, higher pay, further take down and de-esculation training, and only male officers who are large enough to take done most anyone safely. Along with minority self elected groups to govern police actions.

That’s too long of a statement to post right now. I’ll try to find the care to post it when I get off work.

It basically surrounds the concept of being a decent human being.... something Cops tends to struggle with.

Sounds similar to a podcast I’m listening to interviewing a Port of Seattle officer named Greg Anderson who posted a video of himself sharing outrage for the behavior of LEO during the pandemic.
You’ll have to find the video yourself, it’s good, but his agency made him take it down. He’s now in the process of being separated from his post.

The interview touches directly on the point you’re making. If you care to listen, Cleared Hot podcast, Episode #129.

They just recently arrested that **** officer that killed the victim.
What a horrible, horrible situation. I just heard on the news that that **** had prior issues as a police officer. I hope that **** gets his.

***This is not a slam on police officers all over. I respect the police and the laws of America, but when you see stuff like this??!?!!?
TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR!

Are you willing to pay higher tax rates for a better police force? Is the city’s populace willing to? Maybe the mayhem in MPLS would influence someone to answer yes.

I think everyone would love to see the veil of blue protecting blue dissolve, but that seems difficult given the bonds that come along with teams operating in hi stress environments.

Definitely better and frequent training is needed, but that goes back to resources and money.

I would personally but most others would not be willing too.

I'm sure this will get buried, but wanted to add my $.02 to the discussion. The problem is deep rooted and it's the fault of the entire department and who and how they hire.

About 10 years ago, one of my brother's friends applied to the San Jose Police Department. My brother and two other friends all got called as references for his character. by the PD. Here's the problem, three of them (not sure who else they called) all gave honest opinions. He always abused power (was working security for years prior), was racist, and was overly aggressive unnecessarily.

Well, take one guess who got hired to the SJPD despite three people voicing their concerns? He never got passed the probational period and was fired (thank god). To this day, he still won't tell people why he was fired.

My point is the departments knowingly hire shitty people. They know people are liabilities yet proceed with handing them a badge and gun. That is not OK. Situations like that lead to where we currently are.

Easy solution. There is one of two choices:

Cities will pay one way or the other. Pay more for quality people and give them training. Invest in good officers.

OR, skimp on the hiring process, letting any shitbag that applies become a police officer and slash training due to costs, and pay out the ass for lawsuits.

Taxes do not need to be raised for this.

I work in local government on the operations side of my dept. Going on my 18th year in Sept. Want to know a not so secret? Every freaking year we have a surplus of money at years end that we rush to spend on a bunch of BS. I'm talking millions. We have 6 departments here so I'm sure its the same in the other departments too. The government can reallocate funds to give Police/Teachers raises but won't for some reason. I know they can see us spending millions the last month of the fiscal year and put 2+2 together.
