I called it, but didn't think it would happen this fast. Who's going to clean up the toxic corridor of hazmat fallout?

LOL, guess what they are building 15 miles from me as the crow flies? A brand-new ****ing utility scale battery storage site on the soon to be closed Becker coal fired powerplant.

More dots to connect. The Ford battery plant is Chinese. The 7500 tax credit does not allow for EVs made by Chinese. Ford made a strategic decision to stick its tongue up Biden's ass but now a Chinese battery plant is radioactive. It is impressive how little thought was put into any of this.

Wait. This cannot be true. I remember reading from one astute poster on here (cough... canadian) that these auto manufacturers were geniuses reading the future crystal ball and us plebs had no idea what we were talking about.

EV owner has to ship his Rivian 6 hours away to find a body shop willing to remove dent. It begs the question of what body shop insurance companies are telling them about rates and liability, or about body shop owners' willingness to take on the challenge of parts availability and liability.

The stupid is real.

A Kansas energy provider paused plans to transition away from coal power and aims to raise its rates to meet the energy demands of a new, $4 billion electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing factory.

"Evergy is doubling down on costly, dirty coal and asking Kansans to foot the bill," Ty Gorman, a campaign representative for the Sierra Club Beyond Coal Campaign, wrote in April. "Evergy’s business decisions have squandered tens of millions of dollars on coal, causing an estimated 18 premature deaths annually and disproportionately harming Black and LatinX communities."

Last year, Panasonic Energy broke ground on a 4 million-square-foot EV project in De Soto, Kansas, one of the largest facilities of its kind in the U.S. To meet energy demands, Evergy, the utility company serving the factory, will continue burning coal at part of its nearby Lawrence Energy Center until at least 2028, delaying plans to transition to natural gas by the end of the year.

Evergy reversed plans to transition part of the Lawrence Energy Center from coal to natural gas by the end of 2023 in order to supply the EV plant with energy. Robert Nickelsberg

Additionally, to help pay for the infrastructure required to meet Panasonic’s anticipated electricity demand, Evergy asked the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) for approval to raise 736,000 residential customers’ energy bills an average of 10% and as much as nearly 25% in some parts of the state, according to The Wichita Eagle.

Before these moves drew criticism from environmental advocates and Kansas officials, the project was touted as a huge win for the state.

"This project will be transformative for our state’s economy, providing in total 8,000 high-quality jobs that will help more Kansans create better lives for themselves and their children," Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said when the project was announced in July 2022. "Winning this project shows that Kansas has what it takes to compete on a global scale — and that our pro-business climate is driving the technological innovation needed to achieve a more prosperous and sustainable future."

The EV factory will require between 200 and 250 megawatts of electricity to operate, around the amount needed to power a small city, The Kansas City Star reported.

In other words, the vast majority of EV owners have an ICE sitting next to the EV in the garage, because they know EV's are shit for actually traveling any distance. They can flash their Green Cred for predictable short commutes and bopping around town.

The JD Power E-Vision Intelligence Report paints a clear picture: electric cars remain predominantly a luxury market phenomenon. While EVs have gained ground in recent years, the exorbitant cost of mass-market brand EVs compared to their ICE counterparts is a significant barrier for many consumers. The data suggests that manufacturers need to bridge this affordability gap to tap into the mass market segment and bring EVs within the reach of a broader range of consumers. Only then can EVs truly become a mainstream choice for the average car buyer, and the transition to a greener future can gain momentum.
