how do you know how many shims to have, or not have?
26 spline end play

you check the endplay with a gauge. cant remember exactly what it should be. if you bought a liberty 26 spline it should say.
You're supposed to use a gauge. I did it by feel.
If you still have the old one mounted in the tranny: By hand slightly pull out and push it back in a few times to get the feel.
Pull off the plate, remove the old one and place the new one in place, put the plate back on. Play with the shims till you get the same feel.
Also, anytime you remove the front plate the tranny should be standing straight up and down, if you do it laying down you risk things falling out of place while the cover is off.
