Oof. There had to be fail somewhere. Ford can refine this transmission all they want but in the end it defines a limit or cap in terms of power modifications. It won't be anywhere near as robust as the outgoing GT500's TR6060 and it'll be disappointing if these reports are indeed correct, meaning the latest Tremec offering, the TR6070 7-speed, was turned away at the gate. Furthermore, I suspect that Ford/Getrag did not engineer a traditional tailhousing in these updates and as such that means everyone is stuck with the remote mounted shifter again. This had to be a weight/efficiency decision (I also wonder if the costs are that much lower for a Chinese produced transmission vs one produced in Mexico) that won out over an extremely durable/heavy transmission. Come on Ford. It isn't too late to make a different choice here... Makes perfect sense. Nobody has commented on the driveshaft design as of yet so this mention is nice to see. My guess, based on the fact that the S550 wheelbase is close to that of the S197 is that we'll see a two piece shaft as the standard base unit (will Ford move to aluminum over steel?) and that the elevated critical speed of the CF shaft will be employed so that Ford can bump a near 155mph speed limit once again on the "Top Dog" GT350. Hopefully, the related flanges will carry through the V8 line and as such allow retrofit from the top dog on down to (for example) the V8 model being offered on the '15.
