Ambitious trip. Sounds like a sure lifetime memory for all. (Hopefully a good one...) Back when our kids were young like yours we traveled Alberta to BC regularly to visit the in-laws. Only around 1200 km (700+ Mi.) We put the kids on wildlife spotting duty and would stop for any that were notable. (Moose, bears and bald eagles, etc. Not ducks and bullshit animals like squirrels.) Make it a bit competitive and it can kill a lot of hours. Back seat kid takes the screw on visibility so arbitrary award of extra points for a superior animal spotted from the back might be needed. Hotels should, if possible, have water slides. Tire them out so they sleep a bit in the car. Avoid anyone taking a sunburn part way through the trip. If this happens the trip is doomed. Sounds great. Congrats on retirement. Good luck and Godspeed.
