Over the past ten years, I've traveled to Germany five times and navigated the Autobahn multiple times. World wide, I think the German drivers are, by far, the best trained. In reference to passing while using the left lane to do so, here is the way the German's do it: If you are in the far right lane and approaching a slower moving vehicle, you check your rear and side view mirrors for a faster moving car approaching in the left lane. It's a "speed judgement" call whether you can signal, swing out, pass the slower car and get back over without causing the left lane approaching car to have to hit his brakes. The Germans are pretty adept at doing this. In the USA that is not the case. In Germany there are times when trucks will pass another truck and sometimes will cause a left lane vehicle to slow to allow the truck to get back over, but it's not the norm. Not all of the Autobahn system is "no speed limit". The majority has speed limits. In the USA it's a whole different game. Poorly trained and self absorbed drivers seem to be the standard fare. Some States have a sign saying "keep right except to pass" unfortunately, its ignored and probably rarely enforced.
