flex-plate, for 1968 302 ,motor

help............... do you have to use the small 6 bolt ring when you bolt on the flex plate, it's about 6 " around, my shop says you do not have to use it, but i allways have, 20 years ago. it is a 347 small block, with a aod trans. my e-mail is" [email protected] and phone is 630-400-1966. name is andy boutwell. thanks for any help.
