So, there's no difference to where the oil level should measure in the pan to minimize oil windage and provide sufficient oil feed to the pump. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention on previous oil changes with this combo because they involved priming the engine with oil on a restart, so I "snuck up" on the oil level by reading stick levels and didn't pay much attention to the number of quarts used throughout the process. This time it was just a regular oil change. After a good couple hour drain, I added 8 quarts of oil to the engine and the filter and did a starter prime followed by a start up. Seeing this thread and before I add the additional 1/2 quart, I pulled the stick a couple of times and the oil level is at the upper hole above the crosshatch on the dip stick. I have to think the 13-14 dipstick is going to be shorter and the marks are going to be higher up on the stick than the 5.4 markings. With a .5" quart low, I have to think the level would show lower in the crosshatch on a 5.8 dipstick.
Funny you mention that. Maybe they already have. Ford used the same oil pan from 2007 to 2012. When they introduced the 2013, they used a cast aluminum oil pan instead of the stamped steel unit used in the 5.4. The dipstick tube is the same for all model years. While you would think the dipstick would be the same, it has a different part number for 13-14. The 11-14 aluminum blocks likewise use the same windage tray. The windage tray also serves as the oil pan gasket. So what does all that mean? Not a whole lot unless you start swapping parts. There are only three differences between an aluminum 5.4 and 5.8 and they only have to do with machining operations. The 5.8 has a bigger bore, an additional water passage to the cylinder head and provision for oil squirters. So, there's no difference to where the oil level should measure in the pan to minimize oil windage and provide sufficient oil feed to the pump. One could argue that the 5.8 may need more oil while it's running to support the oil squirter operations. So perhaps Ford is altering the fill level to compensate for the oil squirters. How do the two compare to one another. Since I'm running a 5.8 with the aluminum pan and the 5.4 dipstick, I thought I'd compare the fill levels. The guidance for the 5.8 is 8.5 quarts with a filter change. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention on previous oil changes with this combo because they involved priming the engine with oil on a restart, so I "snuck up" on the oil level by reading stick levels and didn't pay much attention to the number of quarts used throughout the process. I'll get the new stick sooner or later, but I posted this to perhaps answer some of the same questions I had on this post. Here's @nickf2005's pic. I put a black arrow for his fill level (if you have trouble seeing it) and a red arrow where my 8 qt fill level is with the larger oil pan and additional .6 qts. This tells me part of the 2 quart increase in the 5.8 is actually attributable to the pan, the rest is a change in fill levels.
