Anybody who works in advertising long enough will encounter the minority-owned media shakedown. The bigger or more government the advertiser, the sooner and more often it will happen. Sometimes it's low key, like "we just want to make sure our audience is properly represented in your advertising investments," but often sounds more like "that's a nice company you have there, be a shame if it came out you were racist". And that's what's happening here. The thing is, just because the media entity is minority owned doesn't mean its audiences can't be reached in other ways that are usually already taking place. They're usually dog turd publishers with tiny audiences well below the radar of mass marketers, but they're there with their hand out. I'll never forget running the media investments for a significant state government entity that had mandates for the use of minority- and women-owned suppliers. I got a call from a guy who ran some 2-bit Black newspaper complaining about how they weren't on the buy. I said something like we could maybe fit him in using the mandate and he got all indignant, "I'm not looking for a handout". Yes. Yes you are, you shiny-suit mother****er, now take your 3 dollars and **** off.
