I've got Passport 9500ix and in general, especially on the freeway it does pick up signals from a long way off. There have been a couple times when it did not sound off until I was so close, it wouldn't have much mattered, but that was when the LEO was hiding off to the side on a curve. Hwy 1 south of Santa Cruz CA is just a place one's better off just not to exceed by more than 5 mph at most because that's their main preoccupation. Other places, which I won't specify, I've been pulled over and loudly told, "listen, you don't have to do 65 out here, but you can't do 90." In late model vehicles nowadays, unless you're doing something reckless, you can pretty much cruise 75-80 in a 65 very safely and without hassle. I've also been out by China Lake Naval Air Base near Ridgecrest CA and had the laser alert sounding off like crazy for about a 20-mile zone and never, ever saw any LEO out there to account for the alarm and "LASER ALERT" voice, so I don't know why that is. For some reason, having that female voice barking is grating on the nerves but it sure gets my attention. Other than that place, my laser alert has only sounded off one or two other times in the year that I've had it, so I don't know what's up with that. The K band and occasional X band is a bearable cost of doing business. Not that bad. And the dash-mounted flashing light is very helpful too because with music loud enough, which is often the case with me, I can't hear the beeping sometimes. In general, a detector is without a doubt a great investment because however vigilant one is, you can't incessantly be on the lookout because of other stuff on the mind.
