The Need for Speed movie hero car raises $300,000 for the Henry Ford Health System at Barrett-Jackson

If you enjoyed seeing the widebody Mustang race across the silver screen in the ‘Need for Speed’ movie, you could have actually bought one of the cars used for the movie. Well, you could have owned one—provided you had $300,000 to spare. But hey, it’s a rare car and the money went to a good cause after the car was sold at Barrett-Jackson’s West Palm Beach, Florida, auction.

Dave Flynn of Columbiana, Ohio, put in the winning bid for the movie hero car after it was driven onto the Barrett-Jackson block by John Felice, Ford’s vice president of U.S. marketing, sales and service. The auction was set at no reserve, so it could have sold at any point, but with the profits benefitting the Henry Ford Health System (a nonprofit founded by Henry Ford), in support of the Edith and Benson Ford Heart and Vascular Institute, the bidding was fierce.

“Everyone has a Mustang story, and the new owner of this movie car now has one that is particularly special,” Steve Ling, North America car marketing manager for Ford, said. “Snagging such a high-profile car right now—50 years after the birth of America’s first pony car—is something to be cherished. And helping such an important cause makes the sale even more memorable.”

It certainly must have been special to take home such a unique car. Not only did it star in a major movie, but it is also upgraded with a host of unique mods. Chief among the changes are a widebody kit sporting an enlarged lower grille with new air intakes; extended rocker panels; a twin-snorkel hood; low-profile mirrors; and those massive, 22-inch Forgiato wheels. Under the hood is a supercharged GT500 5.8-liter, and the whole package is bathed in an eye-catching blue-over-silver paint scheme.

“The best movie cars combine tons of power, rear-wheel drive, great handling and the ability to be easily flung around corners,” the film’s director Scott Waugh said. “As we’ve seen hundreds of times over the years – from ‘Bullitt’ to ‘Gone in Sixty Seconds’ – Mustang fits the bill perfectly, and it’s really a car that represents American culture at its best, which is why we chose it for Toby’s ride in ‘Need for Speed.’”

Congrats to Dave for adding the car to his collection, and kudos to him for helping out a good cause. If you didn’t see his new car when ‘Need for Speed’ played on the big screen, be sure to check it out when it comes to home video later this year.

Good to see that it raised some cash. I'm pretty sure I've seen this car at every major Ford related car event for the part year.
