11-12 Pistons in the GT500 are good for 1000 as confirmed with Mahle. The PWTA liners required a much more precise bore tolerance. Apparently Ford said to hell with it and co developed the 2012 Cobra Jet engine with the 11-12 GT500. Save for the rods, the GT500 helped the CJ amortize the engine cost. Just replace the rods with a set of Manely or, even better, Oliver rods and have fun approaching 4 digit power reliably. Ive driven both the S550 when it came out and I obviously have my GT500. No rattles, feels very comfortable once I got rid of the terrible SVT Performance Pack rear shocks. Ride comfort is of course subjective. I work on Lexus cars and my Shelby doesn't feel any less comfortable. One look to the Boss 302 suspension setup tells me the S197 can handle just fine. 11-12 has 100 les pounds over the hood than the 2010. The S550 is a great car and obviously a TON of people have turned them into absolutely stunning monsters. Id go S550 for the ease of making power if you WANT an automatic. Keep in mind, youre starting from scratch when it comes to boost. Could be a good thing or bad thing. If you don't mind rowing gears though, GT500 all the way. PS: the MT-82 is shit. The TR6060 has its issues grinding 2nd with stock syncro rings, but its can handle A LOT of abuse. Tremec has a set of Hybrid synchro rings that alleviates the 2nd gear issue. My transmission is soon to go to the local Tremec dealer for a rebuild with the new syncro rings.
