If you don't get a lawyer, you can call the number listed on the front of your summons and ask for a continuance. If it is prior to 10-days before your court date you will probably have to come in to court to request it. That should give you enough time to get an attorney. It will mean a second trip to VA but you may find that it is worth it. If you don't go the lawyer route, in my experience for 78/55 you are most likely looking at a fine and court costs. While jail time is a remote possibility I think you will find that it is highly unlikely. I can't give you legal advice, but if I were in the same situation and I lived in PA, I would have a copy of my driving transcript to bring to court. I would take one of the online driver improvement schools that are recognized by Virginia, BEFORE going to court. Then I would talk to the Commonwealth Attorney and see if they would offer to change it to 46.2-870 and keep the speed the same. This way they still get their pound of flesh and the offense becomes a traffic offense instead of a class 1 misdemeanor.
