Ford's ignition system and wires can fire the plugs effectively up to .060 of a gap. Actually, testing that Ted B. did showed that a wider gap produces more downlow TQ by allowing a more complete burn of fuel.

On his suggestion I gapped my plugs to .055 and my car had more low end grunt, but I noticed a little rough idle. I gapped to max end of the factory spec and it seems to be a very nice balance.

Most new plugs come gapped in the box around the .046-.050 range anyway. At least in the last 2 Taurus SLO's that I tuned up that was the case.

I have found Motocraft plugs to be notoriously varied in gap spacing. I suggest you check and regap Motorcrafts accordingly. I have Densos to be the most consistently gapped plugs on the market...
