Here's the latest info from Steven Cole Smith on the death of SVT, as printed in today's Orlando Sentinel:

Ford doesn't see a way forward for SVT

Posted March 2, 2006

" Quietly, Ford Motor Co. has been dismantling SVT -- the Special Vehicle Team -- and sources inside the company suggest that as of April 1, SVT, as we've known it since 1992, will cease to exist.

SVT has had no dedicated products since 2004. A high-performance version of the Sport Trac, called the Adrenalin, was shown at the New York Auto Show in March 2005. At a preview for journalists, SVT director Hau Thai-Tang said that the Adrenalin "is going to turn the performance-vehicle market upside down" when it goes on sale as a 2007 model. Then, last month, the Adrenalin was canceled as part of Ford's "Way Forward" restructuring campaign. The Ford GT supercar, which was developed largely by SVT engineers but was not called an SVT model, will end production later this year.

A new Shelby Cobra GT 500 Mustang is due later this year as a 2007 model. But it will be offered to all 3,900 Ford dealers, instead of SVT's network of roughly 600 dealers.

SVT was founded in 1991 by Robert Rewey, Ford's vice president for marketing and sales, and Neil Ressler, Ford's chief technical officer. The idea was that SVT would consist of a small group of engineers, designers and marketing professionals who would work inside Ford to build and sell high-performance versions of existing products. SVT also set up a separate dealer network, signing up Ford dealers that had an interest in selling performance products.

In 1992, the first two SVT products were launched: The 1993 F-150 Lightning pickup, and the 1993 Mustang Cobra. In 1997, the SVT Contour was introduced, and in 1999, the second-generation Lightning went on sale. In late 2001, the '02 SVT Focus went on sale. By 2004, when production of the Lightning, Mustang Cobra and SVT Focus ended, the company had sold about 145,000 SVT products.

It's likely that Ford will continue to produce special-edition models of several vehicles, but they will not be sold through SVT channels."

I wonder what they will say at Sebring in April????Is it still going on?

I don't like steve cole smith. He gossips. His information is usually wrong.

But on the other hand I've heard the rumour through reputable sources too.

I just hope SVT gets put on the back burner for awhile, not axed.

Here's the "official word from SVTOA (from their website),

"SVTOA TO EVOLVE INTO
A NEW FORD PERFORMANCE CLUB
SVT owners play key role in expanded club
open to all Ford performance fans

Effective July 1, 2006, the Ford Special Vehicle Team Owners Association (SVTOA) will become a brand new Ford performance club, under the direction of Ford Racing Technology. What this means is that Ford Racing and Ford Racing Performance Parts are taking the lead in continuing the company's efforts to enhance the Ford ownership experience -- not only for owners of SVT vehicles, but for owners of all performance Fords of any vintage.

Although specific details are still being worked out, Ford Racing is so confident that the new, expanded club will appeal to Ford enthusiasts that we are extending all SVTOA memberships for 2006. SVTOA memberships expiring in the first six months of 2006 have been extended free of charge through June 30, when membership in the new club will be offered. Current SVTOA memberships expiring after that date will be offered membership in the new club before their renewal date. In the coming weeks, we will be working to expand the number of Benefit Providers. Plus, we'll be consulting with SVTOA Chapter directors to help us develop the kind of organization and benefits that will allow this club to build an even stronger relationship between Ford Motor Company and its most valuable customers.

Since SVTOA membership had not required ownership of an SVT-branded vehicle in the past, the idea of expanding the club to all performance Fords and all Ford enthusiasts is not new. What IS new, however, is that all the product news and information you had enjoyed in SVT Enthusiast magazine will now be included in Team Ford Racing's Inside the Oval magazine. Plus, on top of reading about the world of professional auto racing, you'll find all-new material on Ford's grassroots racing efforts, cool new products and vehicles and the latest in Ford performance parts. What's more, you'll be receiving the expanded Inside The Oval (with SVT Enthusiast inside) on a monthly basis, which is an enhanced benefit compared to the bi-monthly issues of the past few years.

At the same time, Ford Racing will be unifying its Internet presence by creating an umbrella Web site where the SVTOA, SVT, Ford Racing, TFR and Ford Racing Performance Parts can all co-mingle. In the meantime, www.SVTOA.com will still be your avenue to read about – and tell us your thoughts on – how we can take our new club to the next level. We've been reading all of your message board ideas and comments and are taking all suggestions under consideration, so keep them coming.

For now, we'll be helping in the promotion of our Chapters' On-Track events scheduled for this year, contribute new product content to both the website and magazine, and continue our work on building the framework for the new club. And we'll do our best to answer your questions and concerns when you call our Ford Performance Information Center at (866) 377-8862. Stay tuned to www.svtoa.com, and www.fordracingparts.com, for further information on this exciting new era for Ford performance!

Thanks to all of you for your patience and continued support!

Ford Performance Group Marketing Manager"
