Cause Churchill was the man. There have actually been other ships named after 'non-Americans'.

USS Bonne Homme Richard comes to mind.

As long as we never see the USS Billy Bob Clinton...we'll be doing ok.

I would think because he played a major role along with top US Officials during WWII.
