This is a topic that really gets me. I grew up with nothing in the beginning, watched my parents continually work their asses off to improve things and gave my brother and I an upbringing that we are forever grateful. We didn’t have a ton at any time compared to most in the area, but I now see how much they sacrificed to give us as much as possible. I really feel kinda guilty to be honest. So instead of being a POS kid that thinks they’re owed everything, i tell my parents thanks often. They’re both better people than i, but i work to be like them every day...amazing role models. All that said, at my current job (been at this nursing home for over a decade) we have had continual accusations of getting hired in therapy “because we are white”. Some of these folks actually think you could just ask for an application and bam...you’re no longer a CNA, you’re a physical therapist! I tried funneling a great CNA towards nursing or PTA/COTA school because of her exceptional compassion towards her patients...once the thought of taking out loans that could be up to 30-40k were mentioned...hard no. How can anyone not do that math on how much you’d get paid the REST OF YOUR WORKING CAREER to offset and more than pay for those loans? Some people just don’t even try, and it’s no one’s fault but they’re own. This mindset of settling is disturbing to me, i had a 13y/o WF answer me “i guess draw a check” when i asked what she wanted to do when she grew up...13!!! Still haunts me to this day, that girl could’ve done anything she wanted.
