It began in Feb. of 2006 when I bought my 1996 Cobra convertible from a buddy of mine for $5,500 with 111,000 miles on the clock. It was filthy but had a bunch of decent mods installed...
BBK Intake and catless H pipe, Flowmaster exhaust, 3.73 rear gears, big dumb tach, Cobra R wheels, and a styling bar with third brake light. The convertible top was in bad shape with 10 or so tears throughout covered with duct tape. That didn't bother me though since I got such a good deal on the car, I just put the top down wherever I went. The car hadn't been washed in quite some time but fortunately the dirt formed a protective barrier under which the paint was actually in decent shape. After a quick wash it looked oh so much better...

To me, the car was a bloody rocket ship so it was time to take it out and give it a good once over...

The check engine light bulb had been pulled at some point in it's life and when I got it hooked up to a computer there were quite a few codes that needed tending to. Most of them were fixed with a fresh set of FRPP plug wires, 764 plugs, and fuel filter.

The search for more power had begun, I first turned to the BBK intake which is known to be awful as it is chrome and heats up like a "mo fo" as evidenced by the nasty burn I got from touching it after running the car down the track a few times.

I decided to shorten the amount of pipe between the air filter and throttle body to get a bit crisper throttle response so I went with a WMS ceramic coated (to keep the heat out) intake pipe and mated it up with the biggest dam conical filter I could fit in there...

Intake3.jpg

The difference in throttle response was fantastic and it felt a tiny bit quicker up top.

Next the alternator started flaking out so it was replaced by a black powdercoated PA Performance unit...

Next I wanted to get the motor spinning up a bit quicker and the clutch had a ton of miles on it so I went to a Spec aluminum flywheel and their stage 1 lightweight clutch along with some fresh trans fluid...

In the quest for more power I got a killer deal on a set of ceramic coated longtube headers with a matching catless h pipe only to realize that there is no way in hell I would be able to install them myself in my apartment's parking lotl and they've been in the closet ever since...

The ripped top was getting worse and worse so it needed to be replaced, an awful lot of money later the car looked SO much better...

The paint was ok but needed a serious detailing, $300+ worth of detailing crap later including a Porter Cable random orbital and the car looked incredible...

All the while I was running the piss out of the car on the streets and at Atco...

Next up was a killer deal on a Magnaflow Magnapack stainless steel exhaust from a buddy of mine, I couldn't turn down a $680 exhaust for $300 so I gave it a shot to see if I would like it and the result was awesome...

During installation we took the car out with just the h pipe for both $hits and giggles...

Then the tires were shot so they needed to be destroyed...

That brought the car into 2008 and I had long since grown bored with drag and street racing. I decided to start building the car up for my long time dream of open track racing, first up was a set of Maximum Motorsports springs, poly iso's, Terminator a arms, and Steeda x2 balljoints...

After installation and a good detailing :)

A 4 point bar is required to open track the car but I wasn't quite ready for that yet so I headed out to a South Jersey SCCA autocross event to give the new springs a work out and I was hooked...

Next up were MM full length subframe connectors, high flow fat cat, poly sway bar bushings, and endlinks (the spacers can't go on until I get longer studs installed)...

They made the car a bit more lively at the next autocross event...

Magnetic autocross numbers were up next...

The brakes were in need of a bit of love so I went with DBA slotted rotors front and rear, Hawk HPS pads, and stainless steel braided lines...

That actually brings it up to date, all the while I've been daily driving the car to work and up to see my girlfriend an hour and a half away getting 25 mpg with mixed highway and stop light action if I keep the gas pedal off the floor board (which doesn't happen very often) It is now up to 158,000 miles but you would never know it :)

Terrible quality versions of all the videos are all up at my Youtube page http://www.youtube.com/user/DeathEaterCobra

I'd like to see what the paint looked like before. It looks flawless now in the pics, so good work. I would have went with a makita rotary unit myself though. I'm guessing you don't like the tire shine..? There are some products that will keep them black/new looking without the gloss. I wish I would have taken more pics to show the transformation of my car. Sweet car, 18" wheels in your future?;-)

That's pretty cool seeing the different steps of the transformation. I never thought of doing that with mine:(

Very Nice! Did you do all the installs yourself? Particularly the MM SubFrames.

In 1995 when the Cobra R hit I was in high school and it became my first love, then in 1996 when they introduced the dohc v8 that was all aluminum and revs to 7k it was like the white Fender Strat in Wayne's World... She will be mine, oh yes, she will be mine.

The 95' Cobra R's are my favorite thing ever, I'm getting another set this winter for my r compound autocross tires and I'll probably get another set next year to have widened and lipped.

I didn't dare go with a rotary polisher, I had no experience and didn't want to learn how to use a rotary the hard way. I hate tire shine, this is a track car and the only thing I would ever consider putting on the tires is VHT :)
No 18's for me, they ride like shit and the tires are WAY too expensive, it makes a big difference when you're running through at least one set of tires per year

I only did the small stuff myself, all the big stuff I let my suspension tuner handle as he builds and drives race cars for a living so it's worth it to me for him to be the one dialing everything in.

I stole your home made cold air idea about a year ago:p
aka bbk hotair intake.

Down with BBK HAI's!

Ever thought about a panhard bar? I put one in my cobra; it wasn't too hard and the handling gains were impressive.

I'm going with a watts link instead, but there are quite a few things in front of it on my list of upcoming parts.
