Folks, I am unable to see the fluid circulation when I look at the intercooler tank. It has been on and off...

It used to off even while car was on sometimes, but if I jumped it manually, it would start circulating. But now it wont circulate even with manual jumping. I can clear hear the pump working though. What is happening?

I disconnected the hose from the tank in an attempt to release a possible air pocket but nothing happened.

What are your thoughts? Should I throw a new intercooler pump in her?

Thank you.

Yep, you need a new pump. I had the same thing happening with mine, it will come on when ever it wanted to, even doing it manually. So I put a new one in and problem solved.

So you could hear the pump working /running when you jumped it, but no signs of circulation? I don't t get it, how come I hear the pump running, but dont see any circulation?

Yes it sounded like it was on but the coolant was not circulating at all, but most of the time it would not come on at all.

I was not that lucky, I did the burping process. The pump will work at times and other times it would not, so mine didn't had any air pockets.

OP have you tried hitting the pump, sometimes that's all it takes for it to start working again.

I literally took the pigtail off sprayed battery cleaner on the connection and put it back together and pump still works. But I ordered a new one just in case. It's worth a try and cheaper

Did you cross the lines on accident if they where removed? my father did that with his cobra and thought it was a pump failure since it wouldn't move any fluid... Does the motor of the pump sound like its higher pitched than it should?

My pump sounds like it works at all times. Everytime I jump it, I can hear it work but no circulation.

I didnt touch any of the lines. I disconnected the line attaching the tank in an attempt to burp it but nothing happened to I plugged it back on.

I cant remember the sound of the pump before this incident. It sounds like normal to me I guess. The good ol' zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz motor sound.

mine did this but it was an air pocket as well, and thats when i was assembling my car and there was no fluid at all, after filling it all up, i had to get the air pocket out. After that it was all good. idk about your situation though,, if it worked fine and was circulating, then that means there was no air in the system, so only way to get air back in is if the fluid ran low? or through a fitting leak.. idk man, thats weird.

Update

Air pocket. I removed the pump from the clamp but did not disconnect any of the hoses. As soon as I moved the pump out of the clamp, all I could hear was air pockets being released, a.k.a. system burping. I then jumped it and it was circulating normal.

Pump is good I guess.

One thing though....during jump pump circulated very aggressively for 2 to 4 seconds and then it circulates slowly for like 2 seconds, then repeat. When I turned the car on, it didnt start circulating until 4-5 seconds later and then it seemed to circulate aggressively continiously.

How many miles are on this 9 year old car??

Mine died with just 30K on it. I recommend just replacing it with the Ford racing replacement pump. You just cut the bracket off and install it in your old bracket.

An intermittent working I/C pump is an invitation for a detonation event.

The fact it worked slowly and then fast is an indication the pump is on it's way out.

If you want to clean it to get it back working I would do that but keep it for an emergency spare, and run a new one on there now.

Fo far the pump has been running like a champ after the burp.

Now 42k miles.

It is now working at full force continiously. However I think it is a good idea to get another one so I can keep one for emergencies.

Happened to me before too. I burped the system and thought I was good. The first time under WOT coolant blew threw my hood vents and that was when I burped the system the first time.

A couple weeks later under WOT coolant blew through my hood vents again. Needless to say, without question I replaced the pump the next day and its been mint ever since.

BTW my car has 44k. My tuner told me when I got my car tuned my pump was on its way out. I hit 40k on the car ride home from the tuner.

My car has been blowing coolant out and also running rough since i bought it on Sat.. So i changed the plugs and it runs and idles wayy better..

But it seems like its still missing something so i tried to jump the IC pump and i got squat, do you think the IC pump can cause that much of an issue? I havent been getting into boost after finding that out.

Yes, if you're in boost and you have a bad intercooler pump you'll loose a significant amount of power (the car will feel like a dog), and it's unsafe to run it that way anyways....buy a new one, they are like $80
