I am wondering what is in the new 50 gal drum near the backup generator....

Lets confiscate some nuclear material and hold the world hostage. <--- for 1 million dollars!!!

Wow, do be careful, plutonium is, as said, the most persistant and harmful of the "readily available" radioactive elements.

As far as Nike sites, folks in the San Fransico area can go to the Marin County side of the Golden Gate, up there on the western side, there are both old gun emplacements and old Nike sites.

Oh, and way back, the question of what the Nike program was for surfaced. It was to use nuclear missiles to destroy incoming waves/formations of Soviet bombers. While the actual blast might be small, shockwaves can wreak havoc on aircraft.

Ahh, brings back memories. I lived next to a NIKE missile site in Granite, MD for a while. The designator was BA-79. It was shut down in the mid-70s, but the radar towers were still there in the late 80s, and I believe are still there now.

How are people exposed to plutonium? Members of the public living or working near nuclear weapons production plants can be exposed when equipment fails, accidents happen or mistakes are made, causing releases that move off the plant site through the air or in water. Plutonium particles in the air can deposit on the soil, where adults or children may work or play, or on water, which may be a source for drinking, irrigation of crops or recreation. Particles can also deposit on vegetables or on grass eaten by cows that may later provide milk and meat for human consumption.

Why is plutonium a human concern? Plutonium emits alpha radiation and low-energy x-rays, which are easily absorbed by tissue. The alpha radiation travels only about a quarter of an inch in air and cannot penetrate the skin. Therefore, if plutonium remains outside the body, it is generally not harmful. Plutonium is very toxic if it enters into the body because the alpha radiation can damage living tissue. The larger the "dose" in the body, the greater the toxicity.
Human exposure occurs mainly by breathing contaminated air or ingesting contaminated food or drink. Breathing is generally the route of most concern. When plutonium particles are inhaled and lodge in lung tissue, they continue to give off radiation internally. They can remain in the lungs or enter the gastrointestinal tract and the bloodstream. About 80 percent of the plutonium that enters the bloodstream goes either to the liver, bone or bone marrow, where it is retained for years, damaging tissue nearby. That damage may later develop into cancer. Common forms of plutonium do not dissolve significantly in water or body fluids, so little ingested material is actually absorbed into the blood from the gastrointestinal tract.

:uh oh: that's enough for me not to go

Wow, this is one of the most interesting reads I've found on here in a LONG TIME!

I fear for your health though man, I don't know if you can have your body checked for exposure, but it might be a good idea before going back there again (if you do) or just as a safe measure!

AWSOME!!!! Only thing I've found is an old R.W Grace site (the company the movie A Civil Action with John Travolta is about) which is only about a mile through the woods from my friend's house.

Very cool info in here!

That 55 Gallon Drum marked UN-1866 in one of your photos is probably the spray on Paint / Resin Coating used to encapsulate the Plutonium particles after the accident. If you look at the rest of your photos, there is ALOT of peeling paint in that facility.

Do a Google on UN-1866 to find the MSDS on it.

In my opinion, your taking your life and the lives of anyone who lives around you into your own hands. Plutonium is nothing to mess with and the contamination can be taken home and passed to other people around you.

I am not an expert, but I do know a little about this stuff, as I was a Level II Industrial X-Ray Technician for 12 years and took and passed a Radiation Safety Course given by General Atomics in San Diego, CA. At the time I was only about 20 years old, but I got the only 100% on the Test in the entire class, and the rest of the class was filled with Physicists.

General Atomics (www.ga.com) operates the Experimental Doublet III Fusion Reactor, which I use to inspect components of, and is the developer of the Predator Drone.
