i've got a suggestion for all of you..........................

Stop trying to download free porn! :poke:

Free porn is a widely believed myth. Anytime you click a link that says "free vids" it just leads you to another page with more links and the cycle continues until you've got about 100 windows open, spy ware and several viruses. its so damned frustrating :mj:

There should be no need to ever reformat unless you don't know what you are doing, or don't have the patience. Im not saying that those that reformatted are idiots, or stupid, but chances are they don't know computers that well. I have reformatted my computer, but only because I screwed it up when I first got it, and didnt want to deal with it; easier and faster to reformat when there was nothing on it.

Find out the files where they are originating from, and go into the registry and delete them. If you don't feel comfortable doing this, then don't, but its the best way to do things. And while you are at it, get a firewall. The things that are free, are free for a reason. I recommend Zone Alarm, but there are a couple other good ones. I personally hate Norton and McAfee.

Most antivirus/spyware programs like Mcafee will keep you clean now, 2 years ago that was a different story. You could do spybot if your not comfortble reformatting the drive, it's a good product as others have said. I'd wipe the drive and then make sure you have a updated virus program/spyware solution. Also loading hijackthis is a good idea whether you reformat or not. Oh, make sure your using a firewall, windows in ok now, but I like Zonealarm.

Reformatting is a good idea if your machine is full of crap now. It's much better to start clean. Even if you know what your doing it's a good idea, once you have program off the net on a machine that hasn't had proper protection some programs can hide from all but the best.

HAHAHAHAHA This is a joke. Spybot sucks ass. You don't have a clue what you're talking about. "Loading" hijack this? Do you even know what the program does? Firewall won't do anything for spyware that 99% of the time is user installed.

+1 for the most part. Norton and McAfee suck ass though and won't touch a root kit.

This isn't how it happens. Popups don't do it themselves. Most of the time people get those popups saying they have a virus and they click them.

There is no reason for hijack this on a new computer, or one that is fresh..

Yeah, McAfee, and Norton to me are crap. Overrated bs. The key to the firewall, is though a lot of spyware is loaded by the user, zonealarm, makes it pretty much idiot proof to do it. But then again, if people think the key is to just reformat everytime, maybe it wont help them. And I don't care how long anybody has been doing anything, a useless idea, is still that. I don't need to know about your credentials, I know what works, what doesn't, and the best way. Getting viruses off a computer is like a puzzle, takes time, but there IS a way to do it without reformatting.

EDIT: Spybot sucks.

+++++++6.... and it IS a puzzle, but like a rubix cube, once you get it down you can do it in your sleep. The onmly reason I'd run hijack on a new PC is to clean out all the NON SPYWARE crap like all the updaters and shit that try to load.

Tell me about all that crap. Part of the reason I reformatted the first time, didnt feel like doing anything, and wanted all that crap off. I thought dell was bad, but then my gf got a Sony... Damn does that thing have a lot of useless crap on it.

I don't use scanners, and I don't get infections, even with 6 people on my machine at the house doing all kinds of crap. So you can fix a totally spywared out the ass machine faster that Spybot can scan and repair 95% of the problems? If so you should really consider writing a program yourself and selling it to Microsoft, Mcafee, Norton or better yet just put your own name on the product. Hell I'd start recommending it to folks that have problems. I think the starter of the tread wanted a quick fix, not to have to educate themselves on poop shoot kits and f around in the damn registry.

My 03 cents:coolman:

1)Follow all the instructions on this page http://www.elitekiller.com/malware.htm. Install a 30-day trial version of Kaspersky AntiVirus 7, then going through all the settings and maxing out everything, including the heuristics, and then updating and doing a full scan, including the rootkit scan.

2) If you want to go backward, then use System Restore to "go back in time" to before the attack.

3) If you want to do what is absolutely guaranteed to work, back up your data safely, then make a DBAN CD-ROM http://dban.sourceforge.net/ , unplug all drives except your boot drive, DBAN it, then reinstall Windows while taking security precautions http://www.mechbgon.com/build/security1.html (scroll halfway down that page). After finishing, absolutely do not run any infectable filetypes from your old files. DO scan them with a bunch of online virus scanners to try to reduce the chance there's bad things left in them.
