Read this on CNN this morning. Not a surprise to me. More of a confirmation of what most of us suspected as far as intelligence collection online. It is, though, concerning that our privacy rights are pretty much negated if the right conditions arise.

The full news article is HERE. I'll just post the highlights.

NSA Program Taps ALL You Do Online

(CNN) -- You've never heard of XKeyscore, but it definitely knows you. The National Security Agency's top-secret program essentially makes available everything you've ever done on the Internet — browsing history, searches, content of your emails, online chats, even your metadata — all at the tap of the keyboard.

The Guardian exposed the program on Wednesday. Shortly after publication, Edward Snowden came forward as the source.

The program gives analysts the ability to search through the entire database of your information without any prior authorization — no warrant, no court clearance, no signature on a dotted line. An analyst must simply complete a simple onscreen form, and seconds later, your online history is no longer private.

The law requires the NSA to obtain FISA warrants on U.S. citizens, but this is pushed aside for Americans with foreign targets — and this program gives the NSA the technology to do so. The training materials claim XKeyscore assisted in capturing 300 terrorists by 2008.

"XKeyscore is used as a part of NSA's lawful foreign signals intelligence collection system," the agency said in its response. "Allegations of widespread, unchecked analyst access to NSA collection data are simply not true. Access to XKeyscore, as well as all of NSA's analytic tools, is limited to only those personnel who require access for their assigned tasks ... .

"In addition, there are multiple technical, manual and supervisory checks and balances within the system to prevent deliberate misuse from occurring. Every search by an NSA analyst is fully auditable, to ensure that they are proper and within the law. These types of programs allow us to collect the information that enables us to perform our missions successfully -- to defend the nation and to protect U.S. and allied troops abroad."

Unfortunately for us citizens, I suspect that you're correct in that "now," after Snoiwden's revelations most of us are aware that everything we do in the Internet is monitored - and recorded as the NSA deems appropriate.

"Checks and balances?" Thats ridiculous - there are none! It's all under the control of the NSA operatives to determine what they are.

As a private citizen, "we" the people, have no say in anything.

Doesn't surprise me. I've been called a tin foil hat wearer for thinking this for the last few years. I guess the people who don't think this happens are now wearing the tin foil.

I just assume that pretty much everything I do, whether online or not, can be seen by someone, somewhere. Call me a conspiracy theorist or what have you, but with all the unknowns going on with our government, it can't hurt to over-think things.

The worst part about this entire thing is that a majority of people still DO NOT care. Most of my friends and family that aren't very tech savvy don't quite understand the implications of something like this.

Sadly, this is what is wrong with America. It isn't necessarily the fact that the government is doing something like this. It is the fact that the American people as a whole just don't care any more.

You can't turn the heat up from 0 to 100. You have to slowly turn it up. I just fear that we might finally be close to that boiling point.

 Pretty much exactly my thoughts. My dad is a smart guy but has worked for the government in defense agencies for over 20 years. Whenever I talk government with him, he just assumes the gov has his best interest because he has had a secure job and can retire...which i get in some regards but whenever I question the big picture he disagrees with me and always sides with the government saying they must have a reason...

To blindly assume a government has the best interest of its people at all times, is like a government wet dream. IMO it should never happen even if its true... Power corrupts, it needs to be kept in check

Nothing new, it's 30 year old tech. What's new(er) is their ability to store and sort it.

Not that it matters though. How many people bitching about this catalog their entire lives on Facebook? Before you reply with, I just friend people and read comments, that's the important part. They get to see your physical network.
