Neighbor went apeshit over my exhaust, what's the worst that could happen in CA?

Now, I'll say first and foremost I do have probably one of the louder exhaust combos on the market - Corsa Xtreme and MAK Cat deletes.

So I've had a few silly complaints from surrounding apartment complexes with people accusing me of doing 90 up a 25mph hill. Yeah, right. They insist that it must be true because of how loud my car is. Anyways, all that's gone to the way side, I just coast down the hills in neutral when leaving home now.

So, today I was exiting the highway and sped up from about 70-85 to get around a slow Mercedes Benz SUV. Lo and behold, it was my neighbor and boy he was not happy. Must've been the downshift that really pissed him off as we were exiting the highway. Long story short, he follows me to my house and proceeds to go apeshit - "Hey Buddy! I understand your loud exhaust is an extension of your little dick but I'm tired of this shit! I have to hear it every single ****ing day and not to mention the fact that you just cut me off almost causing me to have an accident! I have a buddy who's a highway patrolman, he'll be paying you a visit to see if your exhaust system is legal or not. **** YOU!" I'll give him this much, the little dick joke was pretty funny. Haha

Now keep in mind, I'm just sitting in my car the whole time looking at him with a half-smile shocked that he went out of his way for all this. So after he was done, I simply said "cool, see you around". There's no way I'm going to let a man older than my father coax me into getting into a physical altercation with him and subsequently putting a huge negative stamp on my personal record.

So, basically, what can come of this? I love my exhaust combo and understand it's loud but I don't rev in the neighborhood, do burnouts, speed, etc. I let it warm up in the garage and short-shift my way out then open it up miles away as I'm merging onto the highway (albeit I'm sure you can still hear it).

Being that we're in CA, the state of wonderful emission laws and the best gun laws (sarcasm), what can he do?

Sorry for the long post and thanks for your time.

So, regardless of his "friend" being a highway patrolman, nothing will come of this? And thank you, I didn't see a point in getting worked up over a prune juice drinking, viagra popping and likely cuckold relic. :)

Well someone can file a noise complaint or something, and worst case an officer may come out and check on you, but they can't really check anything unless you are hot rodding up the street when they come out. They will basically just be super annoyed and ask you to keep it down.

You can also get ticketed/referral to a state ref if a cop does pull you over while driving depending on if he wants to press noise violations or emissions violations. If he really does have a cop friend, he may ask him to keep an eye out for you and give you hell.

So, if he does have a friend who's CHP, he can keep an eye out for me on the highways. Good to know. I've gotten a couple fix-it tickets for tint, no front plate and once for loud exhaust but they were all easy to fix. I don't think I ever actually corrected any of the violations since the officers never leave the station to check.

What do you do for a living? Are your skills transferable to Texas or somewhere else that is decent to live? In other words, get the hell out of Calif..

Yeah. Move to Mckinny, Tx. Just roll into town, and you will have a job within the week.

I see you're on both forums. Thanks for the responses! Haha

Work in a local hospital, don't know if the job skills would be transferable. I'd love to move out of state but I wouldn't know where to start. It's been weighing on my mind for months.

Well, shit. Is that so? For real?

technically if the officer finds your in violation they could impound your car. that would be the most extreme case. Most likely get a ticket and a date with a smog referee!

Well, hopefully it doesn't come to all that. I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and continue being mellow in and around the neighborhood. Hopefully he learns to mellow out a bit as well.

True, that is the risk we catless guys take in CA. Gotta take the good with the bad. I guess we'll see what comes of it. Worst case scenario, I'll switch to the quieter Corsa touring mufflers.

Not taking sides, but have you considered some of the fine examples of cut-outs.
You could get out of the neighborhood without irritating the locals and then open up for your music.

I say F'em if he cant take a joke... Haha. He acts like you road up on his lawn and did donuts. Im mean c'mon.. I live in an HOA and I had corsa extremes on my 14 mustang and no one said anything to me. I guess if you have a d**khead for a neighbor thats what your gonna get. Sorry you have to deal with it. Like they say... You never really know your neighbors.

I will give you credit for handling it better than I would have. I would not have been so diplomatic...but good for you as you did not escalate the situation

I would have asked him if buying an expensive Mercedes and taking out a huge loan to pay for it is his a way to pretending he has money, or tell him to buy a faster vehicle so you don't have to drive around him.

On a the more practical side...I would drive around in a lower gear as well near your house/apartment complex to minimize exhaust noise, but, on the highway, you don't have much of a choice.

Dont worry about it. My girl gets people angry because of her loud exhaust than I care to count. Who cares.
