my carrier blew out the spider gears and ford denied the claim...

anyways, i got a new carrier AR3Z-4026-A from the parts dept as i could not get the spider gear set separately. Put it together and shimmed it up to .011" backlash, then applied gear marking compound to see the pattern. according to the frpp 8.8 install pdf i found online it appears as though my pinion shim needs to be thinner.

when i put the current gear set in a few months ago i reused my factory shim (didnt measure it) and it made a little noise, but tolerable. With a regular bearing splitter, it destroyed the original pinion bearing in the process. These bearings are 50 something dollars each after a discount. Is there a tool specifically made for removing pinion bearings that works on this new pinion bearing? I saw this, but am not sure if this applies to the new style. To those who have done this on the new 8.8s, what tool do you use?

Just go back to the older style pinion bearing and race. Every one of these new pinion bearings I've had pressed off have come apart in the process. I pay 11 dollars for pinion bearings?

When using my press and bearing splitter the old one gets damaged. SC2011GT, can I really just remove the race and put in the old style bearing and race?

I would rather replace the bearings all together, that's just me. 50 bucks is pretty high. With a new carrier I would reshim for sure. I replaced a carrier in a Mach 1 that had blown up their spider gears. The factory shims did not work with the new carrier at all, it was way off.

i went on the LRS site and their listing for the 2010+ 8.8 pinion bearing was 59.99 However it also went on to state that the use of the 86-09 pinion inner bearing and race was doable. When i put the carrier in, i put in new carrier bearings and races. So a new fms gear set, 86-09 inner pinion bearing setup(with as many bearings as it takes to get the pattern right) and redline heavy shockproof gear oil is going in. Oh and a crush sleeve...and an axle shaft on the drivers side. I have the brake squeak from the drivers rear(bent flange). its odd that it only causes a squeak but no vibrations even at high speeds. It appears I am not the only one to run into that issue...

Yeah u can use the older style no problem. By the looks of it I would start w about .004 less in the pinion shim and see what it looks like. .011 on back lash is within spec but I prefer 9-10 unless it's marked on the head of the pinion. On the tighter side for a stick. And a solid pinion shim w a stick also.
