my carrier blew out the spider gears and ford denied the claim...
anyways, i got a new carrier AR3Z-4026-A from the parts dept as i could not get the spider gear set separately. Put it together and shimmed it up to .011" backlash, then applied gear marking compound to see the pattern. according to the frpp 8.8 install pdf i found online it appears as though my pinion shim needs to be thinner.
when i put the current gear set in a few months ago i reused my factory shim (didnt measure it) and it made a little noise, but tolerable. With a regular bearing splitter, it destroyed the original pinion bearing in the process. These bearings are 50 something dollars each after a discount. Is there a tool specifically made for removing pinion bearings that works on this new pinion bearing? I saw this, but am not sure if this applies to the new style. Carrier and Pinion Bearing Puller Kit Dana 30 44 60 70 80 Ford 10 25 10 5" | eBay
To those who have done this on the new 8.8s, what tool do you use?
