I have been following the ST since its announcement. I currently have a Cobalt SS turbo sedan, this car is a little beast. I obviously like the ST and have been considering it, Im a ford guy by nature. Im curious to the potential power these cars can make. With Just a few bolt ons and a tune the Cobalt has impressive power gains. Its not uncommon for an intake, down-pipe, and tune to produce an additional 50-70 HP, and even more torque with around 22-24 lbs of boost.

So stock the SS is rated at 260/260 for HP TQ and puts down around 240/240 to the wheels on various dynos to the wheels stock, which is pretty solid.

With an intake, down-pipe and tune, we will be conservative and say its typical and most people can put down 310 hp/340 ft lb with ease to the wheels.

I believe the Focus uses a different turbo, the K03? I may be wrong on that, but isn't that a smaller turbo than the K04 in the SS?

Throw in the weight factor, the Cobalt is pretty light usually around 3,001 lbs from the factory, which is impressive. Whats the STs curb weight?

The interior and luxury aspect is no contest, the Focus is much newer, and way nicer on the inside.

Basically can the ST be made as fast? And will people think its worth the bang for the buck? Is the power potential equal to the SS or Mazdaspeed 3?

Thoughts

few dynos I have seen have the STs making 220-240fwhp but over 265tq! SCT claims their car picked up over 20hp and 50tq just from tuning. The interior and accesories are not contest, the ST has an amazing interior!

It is an amazing car, we just got one in and I had it out the other day. Sounds awesome, pulls good, and the handling is unreal. Great car.

I have a bone stock st2 and my buddy has a cobolt with catless down pipe 3 in exhaust and a big front mount and a tune and stock k04 turbo with runs 25lbs and his car ran a 13.0 so there needs to be some mods done. I raced him on 15lbs and pulled till he hit 3rd
and he pulled away pretty good. So you are going to need a few good mods to beat one
with mods.

I see, Does anyone know the curb weight of the ST? And does it use the K03 turbo?

Time will tell, but comparing stock quarter mile numbers to the SS and MS3, the ST doesn't appear to have equal power. The MS3's trap 100+ and the Cobalt SS's 102+ mph. All of the vids/times I've seen show the ST's around 97mph so far.

SCT just announced their tune/gains

Can you post the numbers, it wont let me look at the forum without joining...

So join, it's a great site and you'll need to get on there if you have an ST but here they are anyways.

Wow those numbers are pretty impressive stock, especially the torque. How much boost is the K03 capable of before it stops making power?

May not be as impressive if the stock pulls were done on 91 octane. I noticed they didn't say what octane the stock pulls were, so they likely added timing and whatever else to benefit the tune once they went with 93 octane. I'd be curious what their #s would be on 91, which is the only thing readily available in this area.

Not sure on the curb weight but yes, the ST uses a K03. I think it's integrated into the exhaust manifold as well, so it should be fun trying to upgrade the turbo.

Actually the exhaust manifold is integrated into the head.

The turbo is a bit of an odd looking assembly (in the catalog anyways) but I'd bet it won't be long before people figure out ways to upgrade.

With any sort of mods, the SS is going to take the ST. I had a SS/TC

So you're saying a modded SS will take a stock ST?

That's like saying a modded 3 valve GT will take a stock GT500.

No one knows yet what the ST is capable of so what do you think will happen when the ST gets mod friendly?

...plus the traction control in the ST roasting the front brakes on the track/auto-x...

I'm sure Ford never considered that owners might track/auto-x these cars so yeah, I'm sure the rotors will probably melt :rollseyes

:nonono:

It was my understanding that the traction control on these cars can actually be turned off.

I've previously owned a bolt on 2010 Mazdaspeed 3, and the cars seem to be pretty similar in terms of output and power band. Very torquey, fun daily drivers.

I no longer own the MS3, but plan on getting the ST in a year or two.
