Has anyone really considered how much damage a cat could inflict on a sleeping human being?

I know large dogs could kill, but that's expected the same way any large aggressive animal would be.

A 4 pound housecat will have your face torn to **** before you're even awake. Factor in the time it would take to find your bearings, get to a light switch, turn it on, and begin defending oneself.....

Humans are defenseless in their night-sleep.

Many years ago me and some friends visited a friend in Austin and stayed at his apartment. I slept on the floor and one morning I woke up and one of my friends asked me what was wrong with my eye. I couldn't open it and when I got up I noticed blood on my pillow. The damn cat clawed my eyelid and just above my eye. That's when I found out just how sound of a sleeper that I was.
