If he was on Iwo then he was a hard mother****er! I wish everyone could see how small the island is in person because it makes it unbelievable how many thousands died there. I may be wrong but off the top of my head I think the KIAs were 26k Marines and 48k Japanese. The Japanese fought to the last man. We shelled the island for days beforehand and when we landed we expected a fight from the start, but the Japanese stayed underground. So the Marines got off the boats ready to go but there was nothing, no one. It was like a whole day before the Japanese came out to fight as we pushed through an island that you can walk across in less than an hour.awesome, thank you for sharing! My great uncle Ray on dads side was at Iwo...somehow by the grace of god he lived thru it. Ray died when I was little kid in the 80s, always remember him with a cigar and beer/drink in his hand.
