SUVs do not get 30 mpg. Sorry. I don't buy the same gas mileage BS. I have an SHO and father has a Limited. 30 mpg highway.

Ford Escape is rated 23 city / 30 fwy
Ford Fusion is rated 23 city / 34 fwy

That's pretty ****ing close. Google says Ford Taurus SHO is rated 16 city / 24 fwy by the way, with the lesser trims at 20/29 respectively.

Plus other CUV from other brands are even better mpg. The Hyundai Kona is 28 city / 32 fwy. CH-R is 27/31. Mazda CX-3 is 29/34.

The Mustangs and SUV are the only things I buy from ford anyhow so it doesn't bother me.
Mustang for me and I do like the SHO. All the other cars, I'll pass. Except for the GT, but I can't afford that anyways. lol
I may be interested a F150 one day way down the road.

I want a former police issue Tahoe.

These mini-SUVs don't interest me. I'd rather have a sedan. I don't have any kids etc to haul around so YMMV.
You're the minority. Most sedan/cuv buyers harder kids and want the space afforded.
I could have seen them drop the aged Taurus, although I like the SHO. But the fusion is a great car. Smaller on the outside, but interior wise, just as roomy, except the trunk. Quieter and rides better. They Sport is just as fast as an SHO and I thought they should have kept that around.

Anyways, I'll continuer to buy Ford's, just will be used I suppose. lol
I am happy they are keeping the mustang, but it has gotten way over priced. Almost $55k for a loaded GT. WTH?
Every sedan has a cuv/suv with comparable mileage

Impala 19/28
Traverse 18/27

Accord 2.0 23/34
Cr-v 2.4 26-32

The list goes on..

Ya. They also rate the EcoBoost at 21 F150. Get 15 actual.
Mine with 20s and 3.73s hot 18.5-19 hwy and 17.2 combined. I saw 20+ routinely when I did the speed limit.

Its estimated that by 2024, 75% of car purchases will be SUV/ crossover. GM is killing some cars as well, especially with Buick showing all vehicles sales are considerable down over previous year.
The crossovers get much better gas mileage than 10 years ago and Americans love “big” vehicles.

It looks like surviving cars will be “specialty vehicles” for the most part.
I for one just purchased a 2018 Explorer Platinum coming from a sedan.
Ford is keeping the car lineup with Lincoln and will produce cars overseas based on popularity ( India comes to mind).

All sounds like a bold move, but I think it is well thought and justified.

Just a shame the Fusion looked damn nice for a mid sized car.

Think I'll still get one as a third car.

I'm still waiting for a SMALL truck 4cly gas or diesel that gets good gas mileage. Something small like the old nissan hard body or a little bigger like my 06 b2300(ranger). I seen 2018 frontiers are going for about 19k local but they are freakin huge. Guess ill be going with a civic when my truck dies since i drive 100miles a day.

I work for ford and we don't see many Taurus vehicle's in the shop. Fusions sold like hotcakes couple of years ago, but now they just sit on the lot. Me personally I love 4 door saloon cars. My next car is going to be the Alfa Romeo Giulia

Can't blame ford tho.. F-150 FX4 4x4 with Chrome wheels and CLOTH interior $51,000 they top out at $70,000
I can only imagine the profits they make per vehicle

They should keep the Focus or a Focus-sized vehicle, skip all the techno gadgetry, and just make it a damned good car. A nice little family starter car that drives better than a 3-series with reliability and longevity like a Corolla. And make it look good, too. Why can't car companies just focus on making a car the absolute best it can be, instead of branching out into dozens of other iterations and models prematurely?

Fixed it for you. Greedy capitalist investors strike again.

That might be a big problem with the sales right there. I can't imagine that big lunchbox on wheels handles all that well.

Not everyone "needs" a crossover, either. Most of the stuff I see people doing with crossovers could easily be accomplished with a family sedan, and that includes the pathetic "soft roading" that they're advertised doing, as though soft roading is something to boast about. "Oh look! Our CUV can drive down a dirt road!" Big woop. So can any car. Subaru gets a pass, considering their crossovers can demonstratively do most things that Jeeps can do. I wouldn't even dream of trying to take an Escape where a Forester can go.

They have base cars like that an no one buys them. If you were shopping for a car would you buy a new base model Taurus or a 3 year old Explorer with more equipment? Cheap base model cars suffer at the hands of slightly used higher-end cars.

I wouldn't buy either one of those cars. LOL But I see what you're saying. I'm not saying build a zero amenity car. Just build something nice, reliable and drives really well, and leave out all the extra fluff; i.e. radar cruise, automatic braking, wifi, etc. Money spent on that crap could be put toward better interior materials and design.

The problem is that the cost of all that stuff you mentioned is not all that much on the OEM level, hence that's where all the profit is on cars. Manufacturers make very little on base model cars. They pretty much only build them for fleets and price advertising.

If you want to see a barebones car you can buy right now here it is:

I know I don't.

But those people are out there.

Only Ford vehicles I own, or any of my family and friends own are SUV/CUV's, pick-up's, and Mustangs.

I say go for it Ford, you can always bring it back.

I just wonder what they'll do with the excess manufacturing capacity, now? I suppose it's plausible they could re-purpose it all to SUVs/CUVs, but that takes time, and money. Plus, it's a waste of time unless they expect something close to a 1-to-1 switch from car sales to whatever models are left over. Sounds to me like they're going to have to close some facilities.

I know I do not want any of this brake assist, blind spot monitoring, etc garbage nanny shit for the stupid & lazy. I can see some of it on huge trucks & SUVs, but every car does not need a backup cam, monitoring everything & your mom's tits, braking for you because you're texting, etc. I see some Miata guys installing backup cameras & I have to laugh. If you need that on a ****ing Miata, get off the road.

My Jetta is bare bones. Has the camera standard, but no monitoring systems or anything & that works for me.

I don't like any of that crap either. Only nice option I have on my F-150 is the cool FX4 seats and the backup camera in the mirror. Other than that it's pretty basic.

From a Ford salesman, old folks love all that extra bullshit, especially older woman.

They'll trade in an 03 Escape and want every single option on a new Edge or something.
