I would do it if the pay was there. Beautiful landscape out there and tons to do.
Would be a cool experience - I would try to live somewhat frugally with full intentions of moving out of there after a couple years.

This should have been a poll. 140+ post consist of 85% or more saying no way.

I think you dodged a bullet.

There's only a few California members that have responded.

but dat weather and surf!

I've debated with the old lady just living a simple life for a couple years, heading out to the beach in SoCal, work at a surf shop or some shit, and just live the easy life......without all the hustle and bustle of the city.

Problem is, I like 'things' too much :D

Stupid small phone keyboard made me hit reply.

What I was saying was there’s many pros and cons to California. If you kind of just turn the blind eye and ignore all these crazy politics it’s not that bad. It really doesn’t effect one per say and you go on about your day. I make enough to pay these crazy taxes and afford this high cost of living. I’m very fortunate for my job and job security and know what I have. I have my highly modified cars that are plated and can be driven daily. I have my California approved handguns and rifles which will still ruin a burglars day who’s breaking in at night even with all these strict laws. Some cons would be the traffic, definitely the traffic. There’s a lot of rude inconsiderate people who won’t wait an extra second at the store to hold the door for the person entering. If you use a turn signal people intentionally do not let you merge. Just lots of people who were never taught any manners or common courtesy.
I have lived here since I graduated high school in 05 and planned to move back to the north west after I completed my trade school but I landed a job that was too good to say too. It’s kind of a blessing and a curse. I make just enough to own a house, mod my toys, raise a family, and enjoy what California has to offer. The outdoors, beaches, mountains, eateries and the car scene are hard to beat here. Not having to blow sprinklers out or put cars up for winter is pretty nice. You can snowboard, ride a dirt bike in the desert and surf all in the same day if you really wanted too. Here I put my car up for summer and bring it out in the winter. We have summer builds here and then enjoy them in the winter in our “boost weather”. Oh ya sometimes the ground shakes too.

You know the real problem with that?

Recovering professionally. I work in Corporate America/High demand position and despite that, taking 2-3 years off to cruise around in a van and see the country side would demolish my career.

How can you turn a blind eye to it? It's shoved in your face every time you get a paycheck. The same thing happens here in IL.

There's two things that are certain, death and taxes.

Only way to get out of taxes is to die.

I'd pay the higher taxes as a trade off for the beautiful weather. Atlanta weather is shit.

I'm not sure you understand the magnitude of the taxes paid in CA. Regardless, it's not so much the amount as what you know they're doing with it.

I don't disagree that taxes can't be avoided. But it pisses me off to no end to see what's done with the money that people pay. The list of stupid shit is too long to type out.

If you dwell on that kind of stuff it will eat you alive. You can’t get away from the taxes, ever. I pay more in taxes than my wife earns. I just enjoy my life here and make the best of it. There’s so much to do year round here it’s unreal. As “bad” as it is here I’m just not ready to leave this place. Honestly as much as I think I’d like to leave this state I’m not sure I ever will. I know what it’s like outside of here so I’m not just imagining what life if like outside of here. For what I do here in California for employment (a water company in the desert), I have looked into jobs in Colorado, Washington state and Texas. I can’t leave this place. It’s literally a $60-80k a year pay cut and 4x the work. Here I’m just a pipeline distribution mechanic. Outside of here in other states or smaller water agencies. I’m the mechanic, electrician, instrument tech, meter reader and the water operator. The cheaper cost of living elsewhere outside of California doesn’t make up for the pay cut. We pay more in taxes here ya but it’s flat out worth it.

As customers change, their demands change and so do their procedures.

Walking into an interview anywhere right now I can say "Why yes, I work with Rock Auto, Advance, Autozone, Carquest, etc...." and basically be turn key Supply Chain/Supplier/Logistics type Analyst/manager anywhere. Every year the business changes just a little bit so every year I adjust to it. Put me 2-3 years out, it would be a hike to get back to being as proficient as I am/have been in the past immediately.

Asking a company to essentially wait for me to be back to 100% is a tall task when demanding 6 figures.

You just got done telling me taxes can't be avoided not two posts ago. My withholding are minimized as much as possible to prevent the government from getting an interest free loan. Minimizing taxes, and eliminating them are very different things.

The fact that my tax money is utterly wasted doesn't dominate my thoughts 24/7. But, I have zero desire to pay a single penny more than I already do.

ahhhhh - I completely understand that.

Different strokes different folks. I do well for my age, but its due to my connections / networking, and customer service / skills which are timeless. That make sense?

I've just now started doing analytics at my current position, so I wouldn't be doing that right off the rip at a new position.

I don't understand your perspective, it seems. The suggestions I mentioned are a couple ways to reduce taxes. I am far from a financial advisor, just a run of the mill guy.

You're wanting to NOT pay taxes?

They are a necessary evil, and a direct reflection of success (usually, i.e. more successful individuals tend to pay MORE in taxes). There's nothing that can be done about it, so why waste so much thought / effort on it. Just pay what ya gotta pay and move on. In California, you're just paying to outlaw straws.

Atlanta we're paying for CONSTANT highway development / construction. It seems sections of 285 / 75 / 575 have been under construction for the better part of 10 years.

Everywhere is the same.

I think what coilded is saying is that he only has enough taxes taken out to owe nothing at the end of the year but not have any refund come either.

Yes, the payroll taxes in California are absurd. Kiss a large portion of your check goodbye. State tax and state SDI are two different things, both are taken from your CA check. State tax can possibly get money back. SDI is long F'ing gone.
