Before we begin, I'd just like to note that this is going to be a very very long thread with a lot of photos both from my cell phone and my Nikon D5600. I'll denote in the last post when I'm out of things to share. I'll have links to full albums within the post as well.

A few of you already heard about this trip and I stated that I'd post one big thread when I got back. I've been a little behind but I finally feel up to sitting down and writing this all out.

Back in Dec of 2017, after a usual night of shit posting on the internet and browsing zuccbook, I had a pretty stupid idea. I figured at this point in my life, I'm not getting any younger and I haven't really done anything crazy or spontaneous (I call this my quarter life crisis, which is partly why I own the mustang).

I grew up during the days of Gran Turismo, played a ton of 1-4 as a kid and I remember racing anything from AE86's to Skyline's to Evo's. Even though I grew up with V8's and fell into European cars, the real JDM cars were always something I wanted to explore at some point.

Stories about the Mid Night Club, Wangan racers, 90/00's tuners like Top Secret, all of these swirled in my mind about what Japanese car culture was. Lets not forget the incredible driving roads, anything from the expressways around Tokyo and Yokohama to the touge's in various prefectures like Gunma, Saitama and Kanagawa.

What really pushed me over the edge was following the photography of one man's driving adventures in this scenic country. I'm sure many of the old timers around here will remember our resident Japanese member @u1cobra, I've enjoyed his pictures since I was in high school and after finding him on facebook and seeing all of his live updates with pictures and touge runs, I said screw it....

I'm going to Japan.

So I roped two friends into this idea and we started to plan. I figured November would be the best time due to cooler weather and less tourism. The trip was planned for Nov 1 - 12th. We would rent a cool car we couldn't get in the US and go explore Japanese car culture and see the country.

Time passed by, eventually the big day arrived. We flew from Philadelphia to San Francisco which was about 6 hours. We then flew from San Francisco to Haneda International in Tokyo which was about 12 hours. I'm so glad I got Economy Plus with the extended legroom.

After missing our first bus to the hotel, we finally made it to our destination. Odaiba, a man made island in the Tokyo Bay. We were staying at the Hotel Trusty Tokyo Bayside in Ariake. I booked this on a Singaporean travel website and saved $70 per night versus using hotels.com. It was the best mix between price and actually being a nice place. (The Hilton down the road was about 300 a night, I paid 80).

Walking to the hotel after getting off the bus. Our hotel was at the base of the left tower.

20181102_173140-XL.jpg

We had mostly been awake since the 31st of oct, it was now the 2nd of Nov. After checking in, my one friend (who shall now be referred to as @Ezbok58a for simplicity sake) went to sleep so my other friend and I went out to get food.

We found a small food court down the street and this place called Mos Burger. Let me tell you, I wish this place existed in the US. They had a burger with like an onion chutney sauce on it which was great. They also serve REAL Coke here of course, none of that High Fructose Corn Syrup crap we get in the US.

20181102_182656-XL.jpg

At this point we were feeling confident. We made it out of the airport, to the hotel, and even found food. Japan was ours for the taking at this point.

For the rest of the night we roamed the island.

Our island had a great view of Rainbow Bridge. This was often a finishing point for people racing on the expressways back in the 80's and 90's.

Odaiba also has it's own giant Gundam
20181102_195058-XL.jpg

We came across what looked like a local drift event while we were on the bus. We walked the island and found it. Turns out it was a D1GP event which is pretty big in Japan.

20181102_195740-XL.jpg

The next day we were staying on the island. We decided to check out the D1GP event. Getting in was free, but paid tickets were required to watch the drifting event and we missed out on getting those sadly. We still got to see a lot of cool stuff and saw some drift action on the big TV and through the stands.

Daigo Saito's C6 Vette. It took me a bit of time to put this all together, I remember someone on here was posting about Daigo Saito's Vette last year. I think he knew Daigo somehow as well, maybe he'll see this thread and chime in. I did see Daigo walking around as well on my way out.

For anyone wondering why this particular drifter matters above the others, he's probably best known for his "jump drift" at Ebisu

Now, as with any car event, usually you can find cool stuff in the parking lot as well. D1GP is no different, we saw tons of cool cars building up on the street in front of the event trying to get into the parking area. We spent a while roaming the parking lot seeing what some of the real street cars in Japan were like.

Toyota Chaser, another very popular car as these are 2JZ powered.

Nissan Stagea wagon, I believe this was 1 of 4 we saw the entire trip. This was a facelift model and most likely RB25 powered.

So one thing I discovered on my first night on the island was a huge BMW dealership down the road from the hotel. This was Tokyo Bay BMW. This dealership was so big it had it's own coffee bar, a grilling station, a Mini dealership, BMW cars, ///M cars and BMW Motorrad in the back, as well as a test drive track behind the dealer.

I decided to stop in after the D1GP and see if I could order some euro spec headlight lenses for my M5. Short story is, they weren't able to order Euro spec parts, only JDM spec parts. They had a lot of models we don't get in the US and a lot of cars had the ///M badge on the fender. I think they "M Sport" even more cars than we have on the US market.

Next stop on the island was the Megaweb Toyota City Showcase. This is a showroom run by Toyota which showcases a lot of its new models. They also have a test drive event which we sadly did not get to partake in. Every time we went back with the goal of test driving a few cars, it would rain.

New Toyota Century, this is a very prestigious car which is usually used by high ranking Gov't officials. The Emperor has his own version of this car. Every Century we saw was always immaculate, I doubt you'll find many run down or clapped out Century's.

This was surprising to see, this is a group S rally car that never got to race. Called the MR2 222D, it started out as a 1.6L RWD car but eventually was made into a 600hp 2.2L AWD car. These cars never got to race because Group B and Group S got cancelled before they made a debut.

So the rental car company we rented from is a company called Omoshiro Rent-A-Car, they rent out enthusiast cars like GT-R's, Evo's, S2K's, anything JDM they probably have it.

全商品 / Sports car open car specialized for rental cars OMOSHIRO RENT-A-CAR

My original plan was to rent a black Evo 6, I figured it was small enough we could maneuver it around the city but it was a sedan so we could fit 3 and our stuff no problem. Sadly, someone snagged it on the day I wanted to pick it up and the day I wanted to return it, so we had to fall back to plan B. Plan B which was probably one of the most ridiculous things I could have rented.

Enter the 1998 Nissan Stagea Autech 260RS. This wagon is rather unique because unlike the normal Stagea which was usually RB25 powered, this car was tuned by Nissan's Autech division and featured a RB26 from the R33 GT-R, as well as a 5spd manual and ATESSA AWD system. They even gave it the Brembo brakes and V-spec GT-R wheels as well. This car is absolutely retarded, it's a 320hp twin turbo AWD manual station wagon that revs to 8000RPM. Plan B everyone!

The dirtiest RB26 in all of Japan

20181103_192008-XL.jpg

It took us about an hour and 20min to get back to the hotel thanks to some late night Tokyo traffic. Driving on the wrong side of the road from the wrong side of the car was certainly a learning curve which I figured out pretty quick. Shifting with my left hand actually came pretty naturally and eventually I fell into sync with this car. This car is still some old school turbo technology and reminds me a lot of driving my old 745i after I put the 5spd in. You hit the gas and wait for the boost to kick in, then it kicks in hard and you take off.

20181103_192339-XL.jpg

This Audi R8 V10 did not move the entire time we parked in the parking garage

20181103_192351-XL.jpg

I did a bit of decoding on the body tag, from what I found this is # 817 of 1734 260RS wagons built and this wagon is a Mk1.5 version. Apparently these cars were shipped to the Autech division where they had the RB26 installed, which is why the body tag says RB25. Kind of like how Alpina's have a BMW vin which is X'd out and replaced with an Alpina VIN.

20181103_211404-XL.jpg

This car was a rental though, it smelled like smoke (because everyone in Japan smokes), it had a rough idle at times and it had plenty of cosmetic issues. Was a good 10 footer though and never left us stranded anywhere.

Awesome thread and pictures! As soon as I saw you were at the D1 event you were going to post Daigo's cars. Im the one that posted the thread about his builds before, and if you saw him then you probably saw my friend Jun there too who was his team manager. The carbon fiber BMW on green wheels is also Daigo's build, but it may be leased out to another team as that is primarily how he makes a lot of his money. He builds and then leases them out and he does so well because he is typically the trend-setter in the drift world. When he does something everyone else follows suit. Everyone said the Vette was too balanced for drifting until he built one and then like 2 or 3 other teams followed suit. That Vette is a beast and the two he has are originally C6Rs.

Now comes the part where we drive off our safe island and venture into other parts of the country.

Our first stop the day after we picked up the rental car was Daikoku Futo Parking Area. This is a very famous parking area on Daikoku, outside Yokohama in the Kanagawa prefecture. Expressway racers used to meet up here and regroup to go hit the highways and race all through the night. To this day it's a very popular car meet area, you never know what you'll see roll into Daikoku.

Well, Sunday morning is when we set off, it was only about 30min from the hotel but Daikoku PA can only be reached from the expressway. Like morons, we listened to google maps and got OFF the expressway. @u1cobra had to come find us and lead us back onto the expressway and into Daikoku PA the correct way. It was pretty crazy chasing a 03 cobra on the metropolitan expressway doing 120mph in a station wagon, certainly made me feel like a wangan racer.

Now, I am not sure if this car is "real" or not, I do know back in the 90's if you put fake Mid Night stickers on your car, members of the actual team would vandalize your car. I'm not sure if that still happens after the club disbanded, the placement and all of these stickers was pretty correct and this car certainly looks to have some highway miles on it due to the rock chips.

Daikoku just keeps going, I could have spent hours here as cars came and went. It's an always changing car meet. The best part is hearing people go up and down the ramps spiraling around you.

This would be what I mean, a group of like 40 bikes, most of them 2 strokes, all rolled in as one and later rolled out as one. Video really doesn't do justice to how loud this was.

Eventually we took a break and went inside. Daikoku PA is after all, a rest stop and has a lot of food places as well as vending machines.

I couldn't read shit on the menu so Yuichi had to translate and pretty much order for us which involved hitting a button on a machine and it gave you a meal ticket. I got a noodle and shrimp bowl with a floating egg. Yuichi proceeded to mock my lack of chop stick skill. I have not been proficient in the art of the chop stick since I was 10.

20181104_104830-XL.jpg

After eating, we went outside and what do you know, the lot kept cycling. This Saleen Mustang rolled in, driven by a woman none the less. Yuichi knew the owner of this car.

Talk about rare, I'm impressed this thing was running!

That was Daikoku PA on a Sunday morning, a goal for later in the trip was to see what one of the famous night time meets looked like. These usually get broken up by the police so we would have to get there as early as possible.

Next stop was without a doubt the best thing we did on this trip.

Our next stop was at Fun2Drive which was south of Yokohama in the Kanagawa prefecture. We signed up for the "Ultimate Hakone Tour" which was a 6 hour tour on some of the most popular touge's in the prefecture, including the Hakone turnpike and others seen in Initial D.

I rented a R33 Skyline GT-R. I would really love to own one of these in two years when they become legal (R34's are too expensive, they start at like 50 grand US) so I wanted to see if I could fit in it and drive it.

Ezbok was supposed to rent the AE86 Sprinter Trueno which was a replica of the Initial D car, but a Spanish customer crashed it into a bus a week before we got there. Backup plan was my other want to own car, a Tommi Makinen Evolution VI

The other cars we had in our group were:

JZA80 MkIV Supra, this was driven by the Navy guy we saw at Daikoku with the R33 GT-T

FD3S RX7, this was driven by a guy from Denver who we later ended up giving a ride back to Tokyo so he could avoid a 2 hour bus ride.

If any of you are ever in Japan for some reason, I really advise you to go on one of these tours. This is not a sight seeing tour, we were doing 60-80mph in pouring rain on these narrow mountain roads with fog and tour busses coming at us in the other direction. It was insane, I don't think I would have been pushing much harder had I been on my own.

We stopped at a mountain top restaurant with Group 1 (we were Group 2) and got lunch.

This thing had to be a handful on some of the roads we were on. I would have rented this for 24hr to blast down the wangan, but I did not want to drive "the widowmaker" on the touge.

At this point we switched cars. I took the Evo and all the photography was done with my camera in the R33. Ezbok was driving the R33.

Okay so, since the forum is rejecting my long posts and at this rate it'd probably take me another 5 hours to post everything out, I'll share the full album links instead.

Honda Collection Hall at Twin Ring Motegi

This museum had a ton of honda race cars, classic cars and more motorcycles than I could count. Was the perfect thing to visit on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.

Once we left the Honda museum, we drove around the grounds of Twin Ring Motegi. It turns out you can actually drive INTO twin ring, we were driving around the pit area. I could be wrong but I don't think most large race circuits in the US would allow this.

On the way back from the track, we visited an Up Garage. Up Garage is a company with stores all around Japan that specialize in selling new and used car parts. Lots of people will trade in parts including exhausts, wheels, even body parts, either to offset the cost of new parts or just to sell for cash. I managed to buy a R33 GT-R gauge cluster with 10,000 KM's for 250 bucks and picked up a Blitz intake pipe w/ BOV for 40 bucks for a friend with a R32 skyline in the states.

Next was the Nismo Omori Factory. Apparently a lot of people don't know this, but you can actually bring your Skyline, GT-R or Fairlady Z to the Nismo Omori Factory and they'll upgrade it for you. I was a bit sad they didn't have a R33 400R on display this time as I had seen in some videos of this place in the past.

We later drove down to see the battleship Mikasa. IIRC this is the oldest suriving battleship in Japan, I believe it predates WW1. These old ships were not made for someone 6ft 5

Finally driving quite a distance from Tokyo, we drove to the Gunma prefecture and made a stop at D'z Racing Cafe Garage. This Cafe is pretty much all Initial D themed, they even have a show accurate AE86 and FD3S RX7 parked outside.

Down the road, we stopped at another place I had heard about from the internet. The Ikaho Toy, Doll and Car museum. This is a pretty uh, interesting place, it's essentially a maze that leads you through like 4 or 5 gift shops. They had a good car collection and it didn't cost that much to get in. They also have some of the set as well as 2 of the movie cars from the Hong Kong live action film version of Initial D.

The last stop in Gunma after the toy museum was driving up the Jomo-Sanzan Panorama Highway to see Mount Haruna and Lake Haruna. If anyone reading this also has no life, this is the real life Mount Akina which is the start of Initial D. The entire mountain pass was covered in skid marks, even with speedbumps installed in the switchback section of the pass, people were still drifting over top of the speedbumps.
