Trailering question?

I’m sure that someone on here has trailered, or does so to get the car to the track so I figured this was the best place to ask. I’m planning to trailer my Terminator soon on a 1,100 mile road trip rather than driving to avoid excess mileage and road wear. I have a nice aluminum 16’ trailer, and plan to install a winch to pull the car up on it. My question is how do I attach the winch cable to the front of the car so as not to damage the bumper, or lip? Does someone make a bolt on tow hook, or similar attachment to make this easier? I know they make them for my Miata, so I was hoping someone made one for these cars as well.

Why can't you drive it up? I'm just curious. I drove mine on the trailer. But the fenders are removable on my trailer.

I did find this with a quick Google search:
Mustang 99-04 Cobra Premium Tow Hook

Thanks for that link. I wish they included details/instructions in the add to indicate how it is attached, and if holes need to be drilled, etc. As for driving it up, the short answer is that can. I’m wanting to add the winch for making it easier to get cars on the trailer, as well as other heavy objects I want to transport, so I figured it would be worth investigating for when I tow the Cobra since I’ll have the winch anyway. It is a lot safer way to get the car up on the trailer, since I can guide it up alone with the remote control. I also figured it would be handy for this car, or others if they weren’t operable for some reason, sort of like a flatbed tow truck;)

I get all that. Adding a winch to my trailer is on the list of things I want to add/change.

I use long axle strap around the A arms when strapping it down, I would feel comfortable winching from here. it still may hit the bumper though trying to pull up the ramps. Flat ground would work perfectly.

I have been looking into a lifting hook and attach it onto the steering rack bolts. Problem is the sway bar might still be in the way.

Run the cable under a pulley mounted in the floor of the trailer.....cable will run along the floor until you reach the point you wish to lock the car down. Just add wheel chocks and let the winch cable lock the front end down then tied down the rear end......DONE!!;):)

not a bad idea, but like you mentioned it does seem like the bumper might be an issue because of the angle of pulling up the ramps. My trailer is beaver tailed, which helps a bit, but pulling from inside the “mouth” I/C opening seems like it would be best if something like that tow hook yellercobra linked above could be made to work. The only issue with that one besides the high price, is that there are no instructions or info describing “how” it mounts. Hopefully no permanent mods need to be done to the bumper cover. I’m assuming the cover would need to be removed though to bolt it to the sub structure. The other problem would be that I’d like something I could easily remove for shows and stuff. If I was a track guy, I’d just leave it on all the time since it’s required for most tracks anyway.

How would that work? I have a solid aluminum floor on my trailer, but if I mounted a pulley to it, the car would only be able to be pulled to where that pulley was mounted. I understand the idea you’re describing to keep the cable low, but with a fixed pulley, I’m not seeing how you could get the car all the way to the winch.

I don't think you'd get to the winch with that set up. You'd basically put the pulley where you want the car to end up. Or maybe a little forward of that.

I have the ZL1 addons tow hook you can bolt it on to the bumper support and it clears my heat exchanger and bumper you have to mount it close to where the bumper support bolts to the frame not in the middle like they show on the website.

Did you have to drill extra holes, or does it bolt to existing ones? I wonder why they show it in the center? Is it possible that you have a previous version? I read somewhere on a different forum, a thread talking about a version that mounted off center, and then a later version that was centered. Do you use it to winch your car onto a trailer? Is being off center an issue for that purpose? Any pics?

I dont have any pics, when i helped my friend install his we mounted it in the center and when we winched it onto the trailer it looked like the bumper support was bending slighlty. So we moved it close to the passenger side where the support bolts to the frame and there has been no issue with either of ours.

Mount the pulley vertically in the floor near the winch........when the car reaches the pulley it will begin to pull the car down to hold it in place!!

You may have to place a SS rub strip or a second pulley in place to keep the cable from eating the floor up close to the pulley??

Thanks, that makes sense. I certainly wouldn’t want to bend anything!

Oh, I see what you’re saying. Since I plan to mount the winch to the floor and the guide is super low, I’m not sure adding a pulley would help much in that position. The winch I bought also uses a nylon rope in place of a steel cable. I was concerned about a cable wearing into the aluminum which was why I chose the nylon rope version, which apparently stronger than a steel cable. The one I have is rated at 12,000 lbs. so it should be able to pull the Cobra up with no issues (other than finding an appropriate attachment point, lol!)

I don't see why a long axel strap wouldn't work? That's what I use to strap the car down while it is on the trailer, why couldn't you use it to winch it up?

Because depending on placement it could damage the bumper. Or dig into it a little. Which is what he's trying to avoid.

Exactly! I thought about just wrapping a strap around the k member or something, but it would likely wreck the chin spoiler and probably bumper as well.
