I had a client that had some reclaimed hardwood floor from James Madison's house (yes! THE James Madisons house in Montpelier) installed in thier 100 year old Mansion. The Carpenters and installers removed and broke the original and could not rebend the shoe mold to bend in the odd contour of the first radius step. If you look closely at the jig I made and the piece that was formed it is far from a smooth radius. Bending pattern jigs had to be made and wedge holds to be cut in the mold to achieve radius to replicate the contour. A piece of non kiln dried oak with straight grains had to be milled from large stock. I put it in a steamer and let it dry. I custom mixed the stain to match and installed. Although not my most intricate work, it is the most recent.View attachment 1739726View attachment 1739727View attachment 1739728View attachment 1739729

I agree 100%, what we have to recognize is that this is 100 year old millwork with few coatings and original appearance. That’s some awesome work. I don’t have the patience for stuff like that. That wood looks great but I don’t like the color of the first spindle. Seems out of place with the natural wood and the other white spindles.
