Well i had my car out last night and it started puffing smoke bad were thinking either I took out a head gasket or possibly the rings took a crap on me. We havent had time to pull it apart yet. My question is how do I get the valve cover off on the drivers side do i have to take the brake booster out? Or is there some trick? Also is there enough room to pull the heads off in the car or will i have to take the motor out of the car?

I have heard you have to pull the motor out of the car to do the heads. That's what most people do. Maybe you can do it in the car though.

you have to unbolt the brake booster to get the driver side cam cover off. It is a PITA but can be done with the motor still in the car. Just have a bottle of power stearing fluid ready because it will leak out all over the place and need to be filled back up.

most people that tear into these engines pull it to get into them. why not try compression and leak down tests to pin point your issues first. pull the plugs and look at them. is there oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil? what about exhaust gases bubbling out the coolant resovoir? what kind of smoke is coming out of the car? is it a bluish color? is it a whitish color? does the exhaust have a sweet smell of burning coolant?

Compression test came up with 2 cylinders at 30psi and 6 at 155 psi Also it was a white smoke coming out of the exhaust. And the 2 dead cylinders arent next to each other either. No metal shavings were found on the plug the car was not detonating.

Damn Boost can be your best friend, yet your worst enemy, good luck on the rebuild. Also I think you should pull the whole motor out anyway, sounds like you have to.

yeah, doesnt sound good. i think a new shortblock is your cure. i wouldnt bother wasting time by trying to get the heads off separate from the rest of the engine. pull it all at once
