Engine hoist experts, can you please tell me where / how to attach the chain to pull the motor? Do I need to buy special bolts? If so what size and what kind?

good thread links on this topic are appreciated too!

FYI, I also have a "big red" engine load leveler on order.

I guess they remove the hoist brakets at the factory. I had to take my blower/intake off and used 2 of the 4 bolt holes in the top front and back of the block and pulled it that way. Much easier with the load leveler.

I'll subscribe to this. When I did mine it came out with the trans from the bottom with the K member.

It would sure be nice if Ford or anyone else sold those factory brackets (or made something similar). :pop:

best way I know of is to remover the blower/intake manifold and use the alternator mounting holes in the front of the block and the trans mount holes in the rear.

I will be pulling mine this weekend to see what the **** happened to my motor. I will be pulling it from the top engine+tranny. The upper and lower intakes are out and i just hooked the load leveler last night, while i wait for friday to go get an engine hoist. There are two holes in the front of the block (Alternator mounting holes) that you attach the load lever to, and at the back use the tranny mount bolts.
As far as needing ford brackets, I did not need them because the load leveller has the attaching brackets and they fit perfectly. For the front i think i used 13mm bolts( not sure, have to check).
I was gonna do, from the bottom, but it looked kinda cumbersome for me.
I will be pulling the motor out by myself on gravel and rocks pavement, i will see how that goes....

I just did this last weekend.

Yes, pull the intake off and in front use the two holes at the top of the block and in the rear use one of the tranny mounting holes at the top. The coolant tube will block the second hole at the back.

The bolts are metric. Just take your existing bolts to the hardware store to find a set of bolts of the proper length.

pulling mine tomorrow, didnt get a load leveler unfortunately. my first time pulling a motor and i dont wanna mess it up. so just bolt right under the driver side valve cover in the front of the motor, and pass side back of motor under the valve cover? i really wanna pull the motor by itself (w out trans). i was thinking about just dropping the trans first, then pulling the motor? will the trans drop, i know it might be a b**** cuz the the input shaft.. can it be done?

also as far as bolts from the motor to trans, there are 7? i believe?

thanks in advance for any tips:beer:

FWIW, I kept of list of the major steps in removing my engine. There are 1001 ways to do it. This is just one of them and probably not ideal, either.
  1. Rear passenger electrical connection *2
  2. CAI filter and tube
  3. TB
  4. Heater core hoses *2
  5. Spark plug wiring
  6. Vacuum hoses
  7. Battery and tray
  8. Fuel line
  9. Radiator assembly
  10. IC hose assembly
  11. large radiator hose assembly
  12. upper engine bracket
  13. lower right engine bracket with pulley
  14. alternator
  15. inner belt
  16. lowest engine bracket
  17. radiator hose reducer
  18. A/C compressor (3 long bronze bolts)
  19. EGR tube
  20. Fuel rail assembly
  21. Driver SC bracket
  22. Intake bolts
  23. Front IC plumbing fitting
  24. SC bolts
  25. SC+IC assembly
  26. Intake bottom hose
  27. Intake
  28. Top pulley and bracket
  29. Top pass pulley on head
  30. Crank pulley
  31. 2 ground straps @ driver engine mount
  32. Power steering pump (leave plubmed, set aside)
  33. Engine block adapter
  34. Engine mounts
  35. Starter
  36. Exhaust manifold to xover bolts
  37. Coolant crossover tube
  38. Clutch fork cover
  39. Clutch cable (use pry bar on fork)
  40. Shifter
  41. Connector near shifter
  42. Rear tranny mount (use jack)
  43. Rear oxygen sensors
  44. Rope under drive shaft
  45. Lift engine (watch exhaust manifolt bolts, firewall, top of tranny) --protect firewall
  46. Engin/tranny bolts
  47. Flywheel cover
  48. Split engine/tranny
  49. Gray connector engine/tranny
  50. Clutch pack
  51. Flywheel
  52. Lift engine
  53. Rear driver head cooling mod + hard coolant line thru engine valley
  54. Mount engine to stand

Here's where I bolted the leveler.

Top two bolts on the block in front.
FrontHoistPointsIMG_0912.jpg

Top passenger bolt on the rear. Note that the top driver bolt is blocked by the coolant tube. Removing the tube with the engine in the car is possible, but a real pain. I chose to use one point at the rear.

Use a bolt in the back of the block from the transmission. That small bridge bracket in the center (behind the pulley bridge) I used a hole in that. Worked perfect.
