How do they steal cars with all of the current anti theft baked into the keys and ECU programming?

Its not like these are mid 90s Hondas.

Must be pros thats for sure.

Simple before I think 2014 you could just use a laptop and a OBD II hookup to it to over ride most of the systems, if you was computer savy enough. I think in 2015 they started to combat this method by having it hard wired and so not able to override the security and disabling features.

Explorer has plenty of room in the second row.
Depends on who's account. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the Explorer Sport we had with the second row. Also just had a friend get rid of his Explorer Sport due to fact he had to move the passenger seat forward with a child seat in the second row.

I have a '12 MKS EcoBoost (same as the SHO more or less) and the leg room in front is plenty with the rear facing car seat I currently have (Chicco Keyfit 30). Will be moving to a convertible seat in the next week and that should give me a little more room. If you go EcoBoost, you're going to need a tune to get a similar feel as your SRT8 from at launch. Also, might consider an EcoBoost Flex or Lincoln MKT (a lot of bang for the buck).

Check in on the Durango. It's got a good amount of room in the second row and plenty of storage room (also has a 3rd row). Should be able to lease one for the money you are looking at. Our 16 RT was mid $40K with all the bells and whistles. My mother in law has a new explorer and I'm surprised to see all the comments about how much room you have in the second row. With my son in his car seat in the second row my wife's knees are nearly hitting the dash in the front and she's only 5ft 6inch tall.

For the best in back seat room you can't go wrong with a F150-250.

Forgot about the Durango, thanks.

I'll take a look at those offerings as well. Thanks

Have a 2016 Explorer Sport with 2nd row buckets. Rear facing child seats (Cybex Cloud and Nuna Rava), I'm 5'10", wife is 5'8". We have tons of room in the front and ride around with front seats nearly 100% back. Rava takes up less room than the newborn Cloud seat.

Great power, even in the mountains. Drives like a nice car, not a truck. The IFS rear definitely helps with driving manners and with seating room.

Now, the roof rack is just a shit design from Ford. Been back 4 times for the dealer to replace the clips, and one time the whole roof rack, to try to keep the black covers attached.

For those complaining about lack of room in the back of the current Explorers... have you tried moving the rear seats back? They are on tracks just like the front buckets. Also, maybe they just have very large child seats?

Yea I've heard several times now, since Friday, that that particular shopping center is bad. It's La Cantera in San Antonio, which is a fairly affluent area. I was parked outside of a Cheesecake Factory and Perry's Steakhouse, haha.
But yea, they have to be professionals. There was only one other car parked in the 12-14 car section we parked in, and every space had filled within the hour that it took to eat lunch and come back out, so they were very quick/efficient at it.

Damn, man, I live in San Antonio also, and the Rim and La Cantera are in a nice area. I guess that's why the thieves target that area lol.

must have been pros. No way an amateur smash and grab thief is doing that.

Ford Flex is damn roomie inside and can be had with an ecoboost engine.

Whatever you decide to get next, make sure its got Lojack equipped. You might not get your ride back, but at least it may lead to those thiefs getting caught.

I'm gonna go against the great and suggest a quad cab 6.7 Diesel F250/350. Plenty of space in that back seat, the diesel will put your child to sleep in no time, and it's just badass.
Also, they hold their value far better than any of the others I've seen suggested.

My 2008 SRT8 was stolen from a shopping center on Friday while I was eating lunch with my wife.

Looking at options to replace it with. We have a 19 month old toddler, and the seating space in the Jeep was surprisingly small. Even with the seat moved up enough to make it uncomfortable for my 5'9" wife to sit in the front, my daughter still had very little room in front of her. So, I'm definitely looking to avoid that.

That said, while my passion is sports cars (or sport suvs or sport trucks), I don't think my budget allows for something newer that is fast and comfortably seats a convertible car seat behind the passenger, unless there's something I'm just not thinking of. My budget is about $30K, or I would look at lease options with a monthly payment of somewhere around a $500/mo top end. I may also consider a higher mileage F250/350 diesel if they are worth considering.

Here's some ideas of things I'm planning to read up on:
Used:
Ford Taurus SHO
Chrysler 300 srt8 (read some complaints about rattles in the 2012s)
Ford Explorer Sport
Ford Edge Sport (not sure if there's more seating room than the Jeep or not, will have to go look at one)
Higher mileage Raptors?
Cadillac CTS-V?

New:
Edge Sport
No idea what else really. I'm not yet sure what can be had in my price range.

Suggestions and personal experience welcome.

I have an '08 WK and the wife has a '13 Edge, there is noticeably more room in the Edge. My wife is 5'2" and is cramped in the Jeep with our son's rear facing car seat (Chicco KeyFit) behind her. In her Edge it's no problem, I even have plenty of room in the front seat (6'2").

Rear seats in the Edge are wider than the Jeep also.

maybe the buckets but i dont think the 2nd row moves back.

we have a 4 month old and 5 year old in the 2nd row. no issues. id definitely recommend a bench 2nd row so you can put baby in the center. for a big suv it handles like a car (since it is one). agile and easy to park, and back up. works great in the snow and even on rough roads. one of the best vehicles ive ever purchased.

whatever you go look at, take baby and car seat with you and install for the test ride. with wife and salesman in the car. diaper bag and stroller as well. that will give you the most realistic idea of what it will be like. went to test drive a focus st about two years ago. with wife in passenger seat, son in back seat with salesman who was about 6'3". poor guy lol.

crew cab truck is great as well. tons of room. just bigger and rides like a truck. but can comfortably seat 3 adults in the back, let alone kids.

I know it's not on your list but seriously if you get a chance, test drive a newer fully loaded F150. I think they are highly underestimated as a family vehicle. I am getting ready to sell mine (2012 fx4 ecoboost) because we need a diesel for towing but was surprised to see other comparable trucks be reselling for around $25k with some mileage. Super comfortable, tons of room in the back, and also a truck. I average 17mpg highway. Plus much safer than a little car IMO.

IMO the Edge Sport and Durango R/T are the two best vehicles mentioned so far. If you don't need the 3rd row, get the Edge Sport. If you want a v8 with more room for people + the ability to tow, Durango R/T.

Given it's Texas, you'd think they would avoid it. I would fully expect someone to catch them and execute them in the parking lot. No questions asked.

Freaks me out when to think about one of my cars getting stolen. Sorry for your troubles! No help on the family vehicle. I have yet to enter the realm of family man lol
