Hey guys, I’m in the market for a cheaper SUV, around the $15k price range. I’ve came across some Escapes that fit what I’m needing and looking for, but have no idea about their reliability, or any issues I may need to look for. I have been researching around and I haven’t seen anything that should completely scare me away, but still thought I should ask here for some insight.

I’m looking at a 2013 SE with 84k miles, 2.0L ecoboost for 11k, clean carfax, 1 owner.
Also looking at a 2014 Titanium with 40k Miles, 1.6L ecoboost for $16k, clean carfax, 1 owner.

I know from a mileage standpoint you want lowest you can afford. This vehicle will be a DD, but I work from home and it won’t see much of daily abuse, it also will NOT be used to tow. I don’t have a preference as far as features, I mainly just want it to be reliable. Any info and insight is very much appreciated! Thanks!

I have the 2013 1.6. Go with the 2.0. The 1.6 is known to have issues. Possibly cylinder head issues. Search for it online for more details.

My gf has a 2015 Escape with the ecoboost 2.0 and she absolutely loves it. Granted, she did come from a crappy 2013 Altima that I despised of and basically convinced her to finally sell that pos. Let me just say that for an suv, it really is fun to drive and decently comfortable for long rides (although hers has the 19's and rides like a tank imo). Has around 43k trouble free miles so far with nothing but synthetic oil changes every 5k miles or so. Gas mileage is great as well for how much pep they have. Just get 18" wheels or smaller on yours with a decent sidewall and it will ride 10x smoother. Oh, and did I mention the fact that this thing will blow the tires off through first and second from a stoplight if you turn traction control off. LOL! Really fun for messing with ricers... obviously hers is the FWD version unfortunately, but we live in Florida right now so having AWD isn't super important. 2.0EB + 18" wheels + AWD = Perfect Escape.

The earliest Escapes 2013 and early 2014's had the most recalls and issues especially the 1.6 ecoboost engine. I had a mid year 2014 Escape SE AWD with the 2.0 ecoboost engine and owned it for 2 years and 25K miles. It was perfect with no issues. I traded it for my current 2016 Edge.

My girl has a 2017 Escape awd with the 2.0 and she loves it.

She couldn't understand why when we were looking at them at the dealership I insisted on only looking at the 2.0 and not the 1.6, I told her to trust me.

She used to complain about her focus not having any balls, and that was a regular 2.0, with a five speed stick.

I told her - you're going into a larger heavier and awd vehicle, you want power. She now understands lol.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Sounds like the 2.0 is the way to go. Only concern is the mileage (84k). I know a lot depends on how it was maintained, and it’s a gamble buying used, but should I be overly worried with the higher miles and the 2.0?

Jaysin, besides a carfax take the vin and ask any ford dealer for an oasis report, the vehicles service history.

This will tell you any work the dealer did, maintenance and recalls.

My wife has a 2016 with the 2.0, FWD, and 24k on the odo - only complaint so far is that she has a tendency to hit the gas too hard and spin the tires on wet roads.

We had a 2013 Ford Fusion titanium with the 2.0 ecoboost. Around 65,000 miles, the fuel economy dropped from around 22 mpg to around 19 to 20. Then the transmission went out at 69,000 miles with no warning.

I have a 2015 ecoboost with the 1.6L. I love it. But I won't get anything other than a titanium. No complaints other than the gas mileage is not ousted as good as I had hoped. But that is because it fails to compensate for my lead foot

Back in the USA!
My wife has a 2015 escape with the 1.6 ecoboost. It's her daily and it has about 40k. No issues so far. Car runs great and it uses the same engine as my Fiesta ST. Obviously in a heavier vehicle it doesn't move out like the ST but it still has some punch down low. Back in February I drove it from AZ all the way to VA without any issues. And just drove it from VA to FL last week. For our small family it's great. Really happy with it.

Wife has a '13 with the 1.6L. No issues yet with 50k miles. It did have a bunch or minor recalls a while back but they were all done and Ford extended the power train warranty for a full year 12k because of the inconvenience.

Thanks for all the input guys. The 2.0 sold before I could look at it. Actually ended up going with a 2012 model. Obviously not anywhere as nice as the Titanium, but for what the gf and I were needing the 12 fit the bill, not to mention almost $6k cheaper. We just needed some more room as my first kid is due in a few weeks. I do appreciate all the input!
